Zach Braff Recalls Awkward Vegas Night When Michael Fassbender Thought He Was Dax Shepard

Zach Braff recently visited the Armchair Expert podcast to share a cringeworthy tale of mistaken identity involving Michael Fassbender. During a night out in Las Vegas with his longtime best friend and Scrubs costar Donald Faison, Braff experienced a rollercoaster of emotions.

The actor had briefly lost track of Faison in a crowded club and was attempting to reunite with him in the DJ booth. Suddenly, the Oscar-nominated Fassbender approached Braff and gripped his shoulders to deliver some high-intensity praise.

Braff described the star of Shame as being incredibly charismatic during the unexpected encounter. “He grabs me, and before I can say anything, he says, ‘I love you.’ I go, ‘Oh my God.’ He goes, ‘I love your work. I love everything that you do… The s— you make is f—ing awesome. I wish we could work together.’”

Braff was feeling great, enjoying all the praise he was receiving. Faison watched with pride, enthusiastically supporting his friend.

But the good feeling quickly disappeared when Fassbender revealed what project had impressed him so much. According to Braff, Fassbender looked at him with a proud expression and then said, “I mean, seriously, CHiPs.”

The problem was, Dax Shepard actually wrote and directed the 2017 CHiPs movie – not Zach Braff. Shepard and Braff often joke about how much they look alike and how people frequently mistake one for the other.

Zach Braff was mortified when he realized the compliments people were giving weren’t for him, but for the person sitting nearby. He explained, “I immediately felt awful, because now I was stuck in an awkward situation with Dax.” Things got even more uncomfortable when Dax Faison tried to explain the misunderstanding.

Zach Braff recounted a funny story about an encounter with Michael Fassbender. Apparently, Fassbender mistook Braff for someone else, and Braff’s friend, Donald Faison, jokingly pointed out the error, saying, “This is Zach Braff!” Fassbender was clearly embarrassed and tried to politely exit the conversation. But Faison wouldn’t let him, instead launching into a list of Braff’s accomplishments, including films like Garden State and The Last Kiss. Braff eventually had to ask Faison to stop, wanting Fassbender to be able to leave without further embarrassment.

He described how someone kept nodding, and he finally asked Donald to let the person go. The person then walked away, and he was so mortified he didn’t even leave the club. Despite the awkward moment, the close friendship between Zach Braff and Donald Faison continues to be a favorite part of their show, Scrubs, for fans.

The enduring bond between the cast was clear in the recent Scrubs revival, which debuted in February. The tenth season reunited fans with familiar faces like Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley. Zach Braff even directed the first episode, adding to his growing success as a director.

The show’s comeback has been a hit with viewers, and the last episode of the current season will air on April 15th. Beyond that, Zach Braff recently wrote and directed the movie ‘A Good Person,’ which stars Florence Pugh. He’s also still co-hosting the popular podcast ‘Fake Doctors, Real Friends’ with Donald Faison.
