Hi there! Wondering what to watch this weekend? I’m Spling, and welcome to the WKNDwatchlist! With awards season over, including the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), here are my top three picks for Best Picture this year.

Old Righteous Blues

Old Righteous Blues, South Africa’s entry for the Oscars, is a moving drama by Muneera Sallies. Set amidst the lively Christmas marching band scene in Robertson, the film tells a Romeo and Juliet-style love story. Ayden Croy plays a young man torn between family traditions and a passionate, but forbidden, relationship. It’s a genuine and emotional film that beautifully captures a unique culture.

Death of a Whistleblower

Ian Gabriel’s “Death of a Whistleblower” is a gripping and visually appealing thriller set against the backdrop of South Africa’s hidden secrets. Noxolo Dlamini delivers a compelling performance as a journalist who bravely uncovers a dangerous conspiracy. While the film is a bit lengthy at two hours, it’s a powerful and relevant tribute to the importance of investigative journalism, offering a gritty and intense viewing experience.

A Kind of Madness

Christiaan Olwagen’s film, A Kind of Madness, is a lively and spirited road trip movie starring the beloved Sandra Prinsloo and Ian Roberts. It’s a heartwarming and funny story that focuses on the challenges of getting older, dealing with dementia, and embracing a little rebellion. Although the other actors don’t quite match the incredible chemistry between Prinsloo and Roberts (who previously won a SAFTA award for their work together), the film is a beautiful, exciting, and unforgettable experience.
