Initially perceived as an endearing figure, Will Smith hailed from the rough streets of West Philadelphia, according to accounts. Known for his catchy tunes and popular sitcom, he eventually transitioned into more profound acting roles.
Subsequently, a series of troubling events unfolded. His marital issues were apparent and widely known, and he physically confronted Chris Rock live on TV. This incident marked a significant decline in Smith’s public image, who had previously been beloved by many.
It’s possible that his charisma and charm were merely a facade, marketed to appeal to millions as the “Will Smith” brand. One might wonder if beneath this surface, he wasn’t always the kind or virtuous individual portrayed. There could have been a hidden, perhaps even sinister, aspect to him all along.
Will Smith drops a new song, but is it any good?
In an apparent effort to restore his wholesome reputation, he’s unveiled a fresh track titled “Pretty Girls” accompanied by a video. While the song’s lyrics aren’t particularly impressive, the video tries to depict Smith living life joyfully once more.
It’s tempting to criticize Smith when he’s facing difficulties. But is it fair? Shouldn’t we cut him some slack every now and then, considering that it was his wife, Jada Pinkett, who brought their marital issues into the public eye?
Instead of hitting Rock, Smith resorted to that action only while protecting Pinkett. However, it was inappropriate because using force is not acceptable, yet on a basic level, one might grasp why Smith acted as he did.
It’s unclear what thoughts guided the artist previously known as the Fresh Prince during the production of the “Pretty Girls” video. Remarkably, he portrays a miniature version of himself, rapping and singing about women of various sizes, shapes, and ethnicities – which is commendable. However, the content of the lyrics takes a negative turn, overshadowed, perhaps intentionally, within the video itself.
It seems likely that he received additional payment for using the term “pose” in this verse, as evidenced by the lines: “I’ma post your pic if you pose/Make one phone call, you in Vogue/Head, shoulders, knees, toes/Hold up, wait, pose.” In simpler terms, it appears that he was possibly compensated for using the word “pose” in this context.
As a gamer, I often find myself humming an old tune that reminds me of my childhood, like “Head, shoulders, knees, and toes.” It seems strange to think that the rhythm could have come from a kids’ sing-along, but hey, Smith must have had some creative inspiration!
Here’s one way I might rephrase that line in first person as a gamer:
“You know when we’re gaming and there are all these cool girls around? Well, if any of them need a drink or anything else, just let me know. I’ve got a soft spot for the bold ones, you could say I appreciate the ‘Tough Crew Connections’, as in, those who aren’t afraid to stand out and make their mark.
One approach to express this in simpler, more conversational language could be: Using an acronym in a hip-hop track is fine as long as people get your message without needing further explanation. However, it’s inconsistent and disrespectful to promote body positivity for women but then explain things that women already know (mansplaining).
Is the video fun? Yeah, mostly. But the song is forgettable.
