The Miracles were the pioneering Motown group to achieve widespread success beyond their genre, starting in 1955. By the early 60s, they consistently landed hits on the Billboard charts, and by the mid-60s, they had become a genuine sensation, with Smokey Robinson leading the charge as their main vocalist.
In 1965, it was fitting for Motown Records to rebrand Robinson’s group as Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, a name they kept until 1972. This was the band that had catapulted him to fame. However, when he chose to go solo in 1972, he departed from this iconic group and never seemed to glance back.
Smokey Robinson left the Miracles in 1972
In 1972, Smokey Robinson decided to depart from the Miracles for two main reasons. Firstly, he felt it was time to prioritize his family after dedicating over a decade to relentless performances and recordings. Secondly, he contemplated stepping away from music altogether following his work with the Miracles, as he desired to delve into the business aspects of the industry. He shared this thought with Vlad TV.
In 1962, he became the Vice President of Motown on a permanent basis, fully dedicating himself to this role. Notably, the singer made it clear that there was no lingering animosity between him and his fellow group members, who were childhood friends.
In the end, it was music that summoned Smokey Robinson back. Prior to achieving success, he released a few unsuccessful solo albums, but things changed when he released A Quiet Storm in 1975. This album produced numerous hits and gave birth to a sub-genre of R&B music that continues to be performed today. Robinson went on to score additional hits with “Cruising” in 1979 and “Being with You” in 1981.
Robinson reunited with the band in 1983
Throughout the 1970s, The Miracles kept putting out new albums. They parted ways with Motown in 1976 and released two more albums before disbanding as a recording group in 1978. However, there was good news for fans in 1983:
The Miracles regrouped and returned to the music scene.
The main members of the original Miracles group, such as Claudette Robinson, Pete Moore, Marv Tarplin, Bobby Rogers, and a member named Robinson, came together again to perform at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever special on NBC. This event is particularly famous for Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk, but it marked the final time that the band would play together with Robinson.
The Miracles performed together until the year 2011. At the same time, Smokey Robinson has consistently collaborated with different artists and produced solo work. In the year 2014, The Miracles were enshrined into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whereas Smokey Robinson was inducted as a solo act back in 1987.
