Genesis experienced one of the most remarkable transformations in music history. Established in 1967, they gradually built a devoted fanbase with a string of critically praised albums in the 1970s. However, it was during the 1980s that they truly burst onto the pop scene with chart-topping hits. The band’s early successes were led by Peter Gabriel, and his departure paved the way for their subsequent metamorphosis.

Initially, Gabriel was one of the original band members, and his dramatic stage presence significantly shaped Genesis’s unique image during their early years. He frequently grabbed the spotlight in press articles about the group, a situation that left his fellow musicians feeling quite aggravated. Some of the band’s most notable albums, such as “Foxtrot” (1972) and “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” (1974), featured Gabriel’s vocals. However, he chose to part ways with the group following the release of the latter album.

In 1975, Peter Gabriel publicly announced his departure from the band. His declaration was unequivocal about his weariness of the competitive nature of the music business and his desire to focus on his loved ones. Additionally, he expressed his hopes for Genesis to continue thriving in his absence.

In his own words, the singer expressed that if he had remained, the growing wealth and fame would have kept him rooted to the limelight. He felt it was crucial to prioritize his family and preserve their bond, as well as rediscover his role as a father. Interestingly, Phil Collins, the band’s drummer, stepped into the lead vocalist position during this time and helped propel the group to 80s commercial fame.

Initially, Gabriel may have been hesitant about fame, yet he eventually embraced the notion of becoming a pop star. From the late 70s onwards, he put out four self-titled albums that strengthened his artistic reputation but failed to boost his popularity as a chart-topper. However, everything transformed with the debut of So in 1986.

Gabriel has never reunited with Genesis onstage

The album took on a more mainstream musical style, achieving two massive successes with “Sledgehammer” and “In Your Eyes.” Gabriel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: first as part of Genesis in 2010 and then individually in 2014. Despite having no apparent ill feelings towards Collins and the other former bandmates, he has shown no interest in sharing a stage with them since his departure in 1975.

Throughout the 21st century, Genesis has taken the stage and toured at different intervals. Their latest tour spanned from 2020 to 2022. Despite Phil Collins’ decision to abstain, his time with the band remains particularly memorable for dedicated fans, adding an extra layer of iconicity.
