Love Island USA’s Season 7 experienced another shocking elimination as Cierra Ortega left the villa. This decision followed the revelation of an old social media post containing a racially insensitive term that she had used. The official confirmation was made during Episode 30, which aired on Peacock on Sunday, July 6.
Approximately 15 minutes into the broadcast, the show’s host, Iain Stirling, provided an update. “Greetings again to Love Island USA; Cierra has departed the villa due to a private matter, which means Nic is now single,” Stirling declared.
Backlash over social media post
After a past post was made public, viewers called for the removal of Cierra Ortega due to her inappropriate comments. In this post, Cierra (an aspiring social media influencer) revealed her cosmetic procedures and used a disrespectful term towards the Asian community when discussing her eye shape, as reported by Deadline.
Online fans voiced their opinions strongly, urging Peacock and the production team to tackle the issue. Prior to the announcement, Cierra’s scenes in the episode had undergone significant edits.
How did Nic react to Cierra leaving?
After Cierra’s departure, Nic Vansteenberghe found himself back on the singles scene within the villa. Shortly following Stirling’s declaration, we saw him dealing with this new information.
Just before Cierra departed, Nic mentioned that his mind was uncluttered. He had a vision of what lay ahead, but now he feels bewildered. It seems to him that with his closest bond apparently severed, he must forge a path on his own. When inquired about pursuing another connection, Nic expressed uncertainty.
This season, Cierra isn’t the initial contestant to depart because of inappropriate language. Back in Season 7, Yulissa Escobar stepped down during Episode 2 following discoveries of an old podcast where she repeatedly used a racially charged slur. After leaving Love Island USA, Yulissa expressed regret for her words but later minimized the issue on her social media platforms.
Fresh talks are brewing among Love Island USA viewers following consecutive eliminations, focusing on thoroughly checking potential cast members’ backgrounds and holding them responsible for their past online activities.
In simpler terms, neither the peacock nor its creators have provided a formal explanation beyond what was shared on air. Similarly, Cierra Ortega hasn’t commented publicly about her departure or the reemergence of the controversial post as of now.
