As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of rock music and its enigmatic guitar gods, I can confidently say that greatness in guitar playing is not just about mastering techniques or possessing raw talent – it’s about weaving a symphony of emotions through the strings.
As a dedicated gamer (or guitar hero, if you will), I’ve noticed that top-tier players often embody a blend of technical prowess, soulful melodies, inventive ideas, and an unyielding passion for their art. Let’s delve into some defining attributes that set great guitarists apart. To start off, there’s no escaping the need for some technical chops. Nailing fundamental techniques like picking, strumming, fingerpicking, bending, sliding, and hammer-ons/pull-offs is non-negotiable.
A common statement about guitar is that it’s easy to learn, but difficult to master. Great guitarists have excellent control over their instruments and can execute complex passages flawlessly (or at least make most of their mistakes sound intentional, which is absolutely a trick of the trade — and not only in rock!). “Emotional” depth is great, but if a guitarist wants to express a wide range of emotions, they should want a wide range of techniques to take us there.
Once the basics have been well-grasped, musicians can explore more complex methods often referred to as “advanced techniques.” Mastering music isn’t only about hitting the right notes; it encompasses a deeper understanding of elements like volume (dynamics), rhythm (timing), melody shaping (phrasing), and tone.
1. They have the ability to express feelings and narrate stories through their playing, making the music more than just sound – an immersive experience. Exceptional guitarists can elevate their craft beyond mere skill, often becoming recognized as creators rather than merely musicians. However, it’s important to note that the term “guitar god” might be overused or appear commonplace, although its meaning remains powerful when genuinely applied.
Innovation and originality set great guitarists apart
It’s hard to be truly original. For example, some people say “Wow! Dave Davies from the Kinks cut up the speaker cone on his amp for rock distortion in “You Really Got Me!” There is some truth to that, as Davies did that. However, distorted guitars technically existed before he made it to the scene — for example, Junior Barnard, guitarist for Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, did his best to make his guitar sound distorted back in the 1940s, if not the ’30s.
Despite being unconventional, Davies showcased his own unique flair as a guitarist – unafraid to explore diverse tones, genres, and performance techniques in an effort to produce something fresh and innovative. Notably, the truly exceptional musicians are not overly cautious about stepping out of their comfort zones from time to time, which often adds intrigue to their work.
Ear training and stage presence
Having a good sense for music enables guitarists to grasp songs swiftly without notation, improvise skillfully, and share musical ideas fluently with other musicians. Essentially, without some inherent musical ability and accumulated experience collaborating with others, even extensive practice may only earn you stardom within the confines of your own private space. As for stage presence, it’s the charisma, confidence, and connection a performer establishes with their audience that can significantly enhance a live performance.
Exceptional guitarists, whether playing live or in a studio setting, often possess an engaging stage presence that keeps their audience enthralled, reminiscent of Pete Townshend from The Who. However, it’s important to note that there’s always an exception to the rule. For instance, Robert Fripp is renowned for not focusing on a performance during his live shows, yet he remains a celebrated guitarist. Nevertheless, a touch of charisma, confidence, and a genuine bond with both the music and the audience are generally beneficial.
But wait…Here is Robert Fripp and his wife having fun with Nirvana’s biggest hit:
While it’s beneficial to possess charisma, remember that confident individuals aren’t necessarily free from self-doubt. Many accomplished musicians grapple with anxiety, particularly after they achieve fame. The secret lies in learning to channel that anxious, restless energy into something exceptional for your audience.
Versatility, persistence, and practice
Demonstrating proficiency in multiple musical genres such as blues, rock, jazz, metal, and more, underscores a guitarist’s flexibility and ability to learn. This versatility is cultivated through perseverance and consistent practice. Exceptional guitarists recognize that achieving mastery requires patience and commitment.
They consistently dedicate time to honing their craft and broadening their musical abilities, always aiming for improvement. They often display a team-oriented approach, although it’s not exclusive. While solo performances highlight individual talent, collaborating with other musicians is equally significant. Notable musicians often find opportunities by being spotlighted by certain artists. Skilled guitarists understand the importance of listening, interacting, and harmonizing with bandmates to produce unified music.
Influence and impact
Exceptional guitarists often carve an enduring impact on their instrument and ignite passion in upcoming musicians. However, they can also be divisive at times. To illustrate, Jimi Hendrix’s groundbreaking interpretation of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is legendary not for its technical perfection, but because it served as a powerful artistic expression that resonated deeply with audiences and viewers. It was indeed shocking.
The extraordinary nature of this creation left people in awe, and it appeared to thrive independently, seemingly unfazed by others’ opinions. Its beauty lies in its imperfections, as it symbolizes a nation struggling yet determined. Indeed, exceptional guitarists can influence the course of music and mold the progression of guitar playing, regardless of whether everyone understands their innovative methods.
Passion
Above everything else, exceptional guitar players hold a profound affection and ardor for their instrument and the melodies it generates. They delight when they create something worthy, sometimes bordering on an intense fascination. To put it simply, there are moments when the guitar might overshadow your requirements, such is the life of the solitary great guitarist!
On the bright side, composing music for conception is indeed an achievement worthy of recognition on its own merit.
As a music enthusiast, my unwavering passion for the guitar fuels my relentless pursuit of mastery and innovation. Every day, I aim to surpass my previous best, exploring new realms of what this instrument can achieve. And let me tell you, if you can’t pull off that iconic “stank face” while playing, then you might not be the guitarist I look up to. It’s a non-negotiable trait in my book.
