As a long-time fan of Wale, it’s been quite the journey watching him navigate through the music industry. From his early days with “Nike Boots” to his recent partnership with Nike, it’s clear that he’s always had a soft spot for the sportswear giant. It’s about time they finally listened and gave him a chance to work together!
Wale has teamed up with Nike to launch their DMV Cherry Blossom Foamposite sneakers, and he’s even given a sneak peek of his latest track “Ghetto Speak” as its soundtrack. To add to that, he appears in an advertisement for the shoes, which hails from Washington D.C.
“From a land that far too well comprehends universal madness / Not too far from the symbolic architecture that masks it / But all is fair, I guess / ‘Cause broken glass, cherry blossoms, them bullet fragments don’t look as fantastic on the pamphlet,” he rhymes in a spoken word style.
It might come as a shock to some that Nike and Wale are only teaming up now, given that he released his hit “Nike Boots” back in 2008. However, it’s worth noting that Wale has long expressed his desire to collaborate with the sports apparel company. For instance, in 2018, he publicly signaled his intentions by pretending to call out Nike when he held up one of their sneakers as if it were a phone.
He questioned on Instagram Live when Nike would act honestly, saying something like, “Could you please reach out to me directly? I can’t seem to get through to them. It appears they are offering deals to others.”
It remains to be seen, but the Nike partnership may signal Wale’s comeback to the limelight. His latest album, “Folarin II,” dropped in 2021, but he released a track called “Max Julien” last year. Additionally, Wale signed with Def Jam in 2023 and is no longer affiliated with Rick Ross’ MMG label.
It appears to be an advantageous decision as he frequently clashes with Meek Mill from MMG, and this year was no exception when the Philadelphia rapper accused him of taking a picture with Dean Stay Reddy, who is reportedly Meek’s adversary.
Meek Mill stated on social media, “Wale has never liked me.” Now, every time I encounter him, I will treat him as if we’re both from the streets. People might think they’re associating with an imposter when they link up with this clown-like individual. If I had known what would happen yesterday, I would have given him a harder time.
It’s possible that when Wale releases his next album, he might delve deeply into his current or past relationship with Meek Mill, or perhaps discuss his feelings about the MMG group.
