Vans Skateboarding Celebrated Curren Caples’ Shoe Launch with a 48-Hour Bash in Palm Springs

Not often does a skateboarder receive their own signature shoe, especially their first one. So when Vans declared that team member Curren Caples would be receiving his own shoe (The Curren), they went all out to make the launch exceptional. This involved gathering a significant portion of the Vans Skateboarding team in Palm Springs for two days filled with skating, surfing, and general fun, all leading up to the launch. “Designing a shoe for Vans is quite a complete circle moment,” expressed Caples about the event. “I’ve been using Vans since I was 12, so I’m really excited to have this opportunity.

As I stepped into the vibrant scene at Palm Springs Surf Club, the evening air buzzed with excitement. Surfers and bodyboarders alike were slicing through the artificially crafted waves, displaying their skills in a thrilling spectacle. Not to be outdone, Curren, this versatile athlete who’s just as comfortable on a surfboard as he is on a skateboard, also showed off his surf prowess.

Steve Van Doren, Vans’ Vice President of Events and Promotions, and the self-proclaimed “Ambassador of Fun,” could be spotted lounging by the pool, enthusiastically encouraging the festivities. Meanwhile, members of the Vans Skateboarding team, such as Zion Wright, were fearlessly taking on the waves. The desert sun cast a golden glow overhead, and a massive inflatable likeness of Curren bobbed up and down in the churning waters.

The second day’s focus shifted from the sea to the land. In the heart of a barren desert, a half-cylinder made of concrete served as an improvised skate ramp, adorned with a beautiful chandelier for illumination. Skaters from Vans, including Caples, took turns showcasing their skills on this ramp, testing the shoes’ capabilities. Scattered around the course were scent discovery stations, where visitors could explore Curren’s cologne that was created in tandem with his signature shoe, named “la chaussure” or “shoe.

Caples mentioned that among his favorite timeless Vans models are the Slip-Ons, Authentics, and Old Skools. He attempted to combine these three shoe styles into one design while incorporating some improvements he felt were necessary.

As guests relaxed with chilled beverages, they watched a screening of The Curren’s campaign film, a humorous take on vintage perfume advertisements, featuring numerous references for skateboarding enthusiasts. Caples explained that the idea to link the shoe with a scent originated as a joke. He sent the Vans team the Johnny Depp Dior Sauvage ad as inspiration, and it eventually grew into a genuine project. Caples expressed his belief that fashion can sometimes be excessively extravagant, and he aimed to give it an ironic twist through this venture.

To wrap things up, the group moved indoors for an all-night party where skaters like Lizzie Armanto and others danced well into the early hours.

The Curren is available now via the Vans webstore and select stockists, and is priced at $80 USD.
