Actor Mario Rodriguez has filed a lawsuit against Tyler Perry, alleging repeated unwanted sexual advances over several years. Rodriguez, who appeared in the film Boo! A Madea Halloween, claims the incidents occurred at Perry’s Los Angeles home, according to the lawsuit filed Thursday in California court.
The lawsuit claims one incident happened in 2018, where Perry allegedly gave Rodriguez a tight hug and inappropriately touched him. Rodriguez is seeking at least $77 million in damages, accusing Perry of s assault, s battery, and intentionally causing emotional distress. He is also suing Lionsgate, the distributor of the movie Boo! A Madea Halloween, alleging they were aware of Perry’s alleged misconduct but did nothing.
Alex Spiro, Matthew Perry’s lawyer, dismissed the claims, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the person making them had previously lost a case against Perry and is now attempting to get money with another old claim that will also fail.
As a longtime movie and TV fan, I was shocked to learn about the second lawsuit alleging that Tyler Perry misused his power in Hollywood. Apparently, another actor, Derek Dixon – who I recognized from shows like The Oval and Ruthless – is claiming Perry physically and sexually assaulted him, pinning him against a wall and groping him. What’s really concerning is that this case has now moved to federal court in Georgia, meaning it’s being taken very seriously.
According to the lawsuit, Perry first reached out to Rodriguez in 2014 through a trainer at an Equinox gym in Los Angeles. He reportedly encouraged Rodriguez to try out for a part in the movie Boo! A Madea Halloween, and allegedly said, “Mario, it’s good to have me on your side.”
Rodriguez alleges that after being cast, Perry invited him to his home and made unwanted sexual advances, including inappropriately touching his thigh near his genitals.
Rodriguez claims Perry made several unwanted advances over a period of years. In one instance, allegedly in 2019, Perry reportedly touched Rodriguez inappropriately and offered him money in exchange for cooperation. According to the lawsuit, Rodriguez rejected these advances, but later received $5,000 on two different occasions after refusing them.
Rodriguez, an actor who has been in The Family Business and also works as a model, said he felt compelled to speak out after hearing about Dixon’s lawsuit. According to the legal complaint, Rodriguez decided it was time to share his experience and seek justice, believing Perry was continuing to abuse his power to harm aspiring actors. He joined others in coming forward to try and stop Perry’s behavior.
This new lawsuit is part of a larger wave of attention surrounding Perry’s conduct in Hollywood. The case is expected to further highlight the imbalance of power often seen between experienced industry professionals and those just starting out.
