Tom Cruise is famous for his incredible work ethic in Hollywood, and director Steven Spielberg recently shared a story illustrating just how dedicated he is. Having directed Cruise in films like Minority Report and War of the Worlds, Spielberg understands this firsthand. He explained what sets Cruise apart during a discussion at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas.
Spielberg shared that he typically arrives on set very early, often around 6:30 AM, before anyone else. While most actors come later, Tom Cruise always made an effort to be there as soon as Spielberg did. Spielberg noted that Cruise would consistently arrive when he did, and on films like Minority Report and War of the Worlds, Cruise would specifically request to be there at the same time so they could plan out the entire day together, which Spielberg found very helpful.

Tom Cruise’s dedication to arriving early and contributing to daily planning demonstrates his strong work ethic. He’s shared in interviews with PEOPLE that he approaches each film as a learning opportunity, often mastering new skills with the intention of using them in his movies. This commitment to growth and leadership is a major reason why he’s so highly respected within the film industry.
Both Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise are currently occupied with new film projects. Spielberg is working on a movie titled Disclosure Day, and Tom Cruise is set to star in Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, which is scheduled for release in 2026.
Many celebrities with similar wealth and recognition might arrive late and remain isolated, but he consistently appears early to assist the director. This demonstrates that his achievements aren’t simply due to chance; they’re a result of hard work and genuine respect for his colleagues.
