THREE Frankenstein Movies (And One TV Show) Are In the Works

It’s been thrilling to see the Universal Monsters realm thrive lately! We were captivated by Robert Eggers’ chilling interpretation of Dracula, titled Nosferatu, which premiered last winter. Similarly, we couldn’t get enough of Universal Epic Universe’s Dark Universe, a theme park dedicated to everything Universal Monsters, when it opened in the spring. However, every other monster may soon seem ordinary compared to Frankenstein, as there are FOUR upcoming projects centered around him. These projects consist of three films and one TV series, and they boast some highly renowned creators and actors. In essence, this is an excellent time for all creatures of the night! The phrase “it’s alive” has never been more fitting.

Gathering here’s all the information we have about the upcoming three Frankenstein films and a TV show set to air on your screens shortly.

Let’s hop to these movies: Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein, Radu Jude & Sebastian Stan’s take on Frankenstein set in Romania, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film The Bride, and Mel Brooks’ humorous version titled Very Young Frankenstein for the TV screen.

Three New Frankenstein Movies Are in the Works

Guillermo del Toro Is Giving Us His Take on Frankenstein for Netflix

You might be familiar with the Frankenstein project already. Known for his iconic work in horror, fantasy, and surrealism, Guillermo del Toro is directing and writing a new Frankenstein movie for Netflix. In this film, Oscar Isaac portrays Doctor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi takes on the role of the Monster/Creature. The cast also includes Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz. This impressive lineup of collaborators promises a truly monumental production. Although we’ve only seen brief previews of del Toro’s Frankenstein movie so far, it’s expected to be nothing short of breathtaking when it is fully unveiled.

The logline describes how Guillermo del Toro, an Academy Award-winning director, is reimagining Mary Shelley’s timeless story about Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant yet arrogant scientist who creates life in a horrifying experiment. The consequences of this experiment prove disastrous for both the scientist and his pitiful creation, leading to tragic outcomes for both parties.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Release Date

In selected cinemas, Guillermo del Toro’s take on ‘Frankenstein’ is set to premiere on October 17. On the other hand, viewers can enjoy it on Netflix starting from November 7.

Frankenstein in Romania Movie Will Star Sebastian Stan

The upcoming Frankenstein film making its debut is titled “Frankenstein in Romania“. Despite the fact that Romania has no previous ties with Frankenstein, its lead actor, Sebastian Stan, is Romanian. This intriguing connection between Frankenstein and Romania promises to make the movie “Frankenstein in Romania” quite captivating. The script for this new Frankenstein film is being penned by Radu Jude who disclosed to The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m writing a movie right now. It’s going to be a Frankenstein story set in Romania, entitled “Frankenstein in Romania“.” Interestingly, Jude envisions that Sebastian Stan will perform dual roles in this film – playing both Victor Frankenstein and his creation.

Details about the upcoming film by Jude and Stan titled “Frankenstein” are scarce at the moment, but it’s known that the plot will weave together the true tale of a covert CIA prison in Romania with the myth of the Frankenstein creature, creating quite a captivating blend.

Frankenstein in Romania‘s Release Date

The release date for the film “Frankenstein in Romania” hasn’t been announced yet, but we can’t wait to find out more details about it as soon as possible.

1. Move directly to: Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein film adaptation
2. Navigate to: Radu Jude and Sebastian Stan’s Frankenstein movie set in Romania
3. Proceed to: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s reinterpretation of the Bride story
4. Switch to: Mel Brooks’ comedic spin-off titled Very Young Frankenstein for television.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Bride of Frankenstein Movie, The Bride!, Is a Punk Rock Film with a Major Cast

In a fresh, edgy reinterpretation of the classic story, Maggie Gyllenhaal directs a Universal Monsters film titled The Bride, where Christian Bale portrays Frankenstein’s monster and Jessie Buckley stars as his bride. With its provocative tagline “Here comes the bride,” this movie promises a gritty punk rock twist on the beloved tale, sure to captivate audiences!

To date, neither a teaser trailer nor any other promotional materials have been unveiled for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Bride of Frankenstein film. However, Gyllenhaal has offered glimpses into the appearance of both The Bride and Frankenstein. People who managed to catch a glimpse of The Bride at Cinema Con described it as extremely gruesome. Furthermore, Gyllenhaal mentioned that in contrast to the original Bride of Frankenstein, our bride will have a significantly larger role and will even speak, which marks a stark departure from the source material.

She proceeds to recount the tale titled “The Bride,” which poses an intriguing thought: “What transpires if the bride who returns exceeds his wildest dreams and doesn’t conform to the image he had in mind, or the stereotype society has imposed on her?

The Bride! Synopsis and Release Date

It seems that “The Bride” is also set in a historical era, immersing us in the 1930s for a tale about revolution. The synopsis for this new version of “Bride of Frankenstein” reveals, “A solitary Frankenstein journeys to 1930s Chicago to enlist the help of Dr. Euphronius in crafting a companion. They reanimate a deceased young woman and create ‘The Bride.’ However, she surpasses their expectations, sparking a passionate romance, police interest, and a fiery social upheaval.

The movie titled “The Bride” is set to hit theaters on March 6, 2026. In this film, you’ll also see Annette Bening, Penélope Cruz, and Peter Sarsgaard sharing the screen.

Mel Brooks Is Working on Very Young Frankenstein TV Series

50 years after Mel Brooks crafted the side-splittingly funny film “Young Frankenstein” starring Gene Wilder, he’s reimagining it as a TV show for FX titled “Very Young Frankenstein“. What a clever twist on the original!

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for the upcoming Frankenstein horror-comedy series that’s on the brink of securing a pilot order. With Joss Whedon’s brother, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, who have proven themselves masters of witty monster parodies, teaming up with Stefani Robinson from the brilliant ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, it’s evident we’re in for a treat. Taika Waititi, the genius behind ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ and ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, will even be directing the pilot episode. This collaboration feels like a celestial gathering of minds crafted in a monstrously humorous heaven. I can hardly wait to see this unholy alliance bring life to our screens!

The overview of the “Very Young Frankenstein” series hints that it’s inspired by Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein,” but the specifics about the storyline in the pilot episode remain unclear at this point. However, as Eric Diaz from TopMob had previously written, we can anticipate some connection to the original film.

It’s possible that a series titled “Very Young Frankenstein” might be an origin story for the character, setting before the events of “Young Frankenstein“. However, it seems less entertaining compared to the original. Similar to how Colin Robinson transformed into a baby in “What We Do in the Shadows“, this new series could depict Dr. Frankenstein’s offspring, perhaps his son or grandson. Instead of living in a castle, they might reside in a place similar to the vampires’ Staten Island home from “What We Do in the Shadows“.

Additionally, we’d love for the show to be filmed in black and white as a tribute to the classic Universal Monsters movies and the movie “Young Frankenstein” specifically.

Here are some options for your list:

– Navigate to: Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein”
– Switch to: Radu Jude and Sebastian Stan’s version of “Frankenstein”, set in Romania
– Check out: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s film, titled “The Bride”
– Explore: Mel Brooks’ comedy series titled “Very Young Frankenstein” on TV

Will We See Even More Frankenstein Movies and Series in the Future?

It doesn’t seem like four different Frankenstein productions are quite enough (jokingly speaking). For now, it’s uncertain whether additional Frankenstein films or series will be produced. However, with three movies and a TV show already in place, it seems sufficient for the moment. On the other hand, The Creature from the Black Lagoon is ready to make his appearance. But if the current Frankenstein films perform well at the box office, there could very well be more productions on the horizon.

For a while, we’ll be excitedly shouting, “It’s alive!” with great enthusiasm, each time there’s a new release at midnight.
