This Neurological Phenomenon Affects Billie Eilish — and Cynthia Erivo Just Revealed She Has It Too

I recently learned something amazing about Cynthia Erivo! She has synesthesia, which basically means her senses get crossed sometimes. It’s this fascinating neurological thing where, for example, she might ‘see’ sounds or ‘taste’ colors. It sounds incredible, and honestly, as a movie lover, I can totally see how that would influence her artistry!

She announced the news while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried, and Laura Dern, as part of a group interview.

Erivo shared that she experiences synesthesia, meaning she associates colors with musical notes. When Jennifer Lawrence sang a note, Erivo immediately said she saw the color blue.

Synesthesia is relatively uncommon, but not unheard of. Experts believe that around 1 to 4 out of every 100 people experience it. Several well-known musicians and artists, like Billie Eilish, Pharrell Williams, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West, have also discussed having synesthesia.

Synesthesia is when your senses get mixed up – for example, you might taste colors or feel sounds, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It’s not an illness itself, but it can sometimes occur with other neurological conditions.

Scientists have found many different kinds of synesthesia, with some estimates reaching as high as 150 unique forms. While it often involves connections between senses like sight, sound, and touch, the way it’s experienced is different for everyone.

Erivo explained that experiencing live orchestral music feels intensely physical. She described a strange sensation, like a wave hitting the back of her head, which she often feels during symphony orchestra concerts. She noted that the combined sound of a full orchestra creates this unique feeling.

The artist explained that her synesthesia doesn’t affect her singing; it’s simply a personal experience. This is different from Billie Eilish, who has stated that her synesthesia is a major source of inspiration for her work. In a 2021 interview with Nylon, Eilish revealed that her music videos, artwork, and live performances are all heavily influenced by the colors she associates with different songs.

Pharrell Williams has noted that experiencing synesthesia – a blending of the senses – is common among musicians. In an interview on NPR’s Morning Edition, he explained that many artists have this ability, and it’s also found in those who haven’t yet become well-known.

Cynthia Erivo has been open about her synesthesia, helping to raise awareness of this often misunderstood condition. She demonstrates that synesthesia isn’t a disability, but a different and fascinating way to perceive the world.
