They Will Kill You EXCLUSIVE: Zazie Beetz reveals character Asia Reaves’ fight for survival and how she prepped for it

After being released from prison, a woman named Asia Reaves, played by Zazie Beetz, searches for work in New York City. She answers an ad for a housekeeper position, but soon finds herself involved in a series of mysterious disappearances. The film, written and directed by Kirill Sokolov, features Alex Litvak and Zazie Beetz, who discussed her role in the movie.

The actress explained that director Kirill Sokolov meticulously planned every detail of the movie, discussing it with her over Zoom. His vision ultimately convinced her to accept the role. While her new horror film, ‘They Will Kill You,’ does have some frightening moments, she said it doesn’t rely heavily on jump scares. However, she also confirmed it features plenty of gore, including ‘squelching sounds, blood, and eyeballs,’ making it a uniquely engaging experience.

Oh my gosh, you guys, she was talking about what it was like for her character that night, and it was SO intense! Apparently, this group, The Virgil, is a full-on Satanic cult – like, they actually do human sacrifices! And she’s saying Asia is their next target. They go after people who are vulnerable, you know, alone and won’t be missed, and who they think won’t fight back. But Asia is fighting, and they are totally caught off guard! It’s amazing because The Virgil members aren’t really fighters themselves, and Asia isn’t some super-trained soldier or anything. She’s just… a normal person, a little messy and clumsy sometimes, but she’s giving it everything she’s got! I loved that – she’s not a perfect hero, she’s just trying to survive and figure things out as she goes, using whatever she can in the moment. It felt so real!

As a lifestyle and wellness enthusiast, I’m always fascinated by how actors prepare for roles, and Zazie Beetz recently shared her training process with me! She was already filming something else in Cape Town when she began, and then really ramped it up when she returned home. She worked with this amazing trainer, Michael Olajide – a former boxer, and just a wonderful person – five days a week for about two hours at a time. The goal was to build those boxing movements into muscle memory. Then, for three weeks before filming actually started, she did daily stunt training to really hone everything. It’s incredible dedication, and it definitely shows on screen!

When preparing for her role in ‘They Will Kill You,’ the training wasn’t about intense physical fitness. It focused more on getting in shape and learning the fight choreography, which was physically less strenuous than traditional weightlifting or workouts. While she did do all of that training and was exhausted, the production team was careful not to overwork her, and she really appreciated that. They prioritized her stamina, which allowed her to perform all the action sequences in the movie.

Meanwhile, They Will Kill You is all set to premiere on March 27, 2026.
