When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion, many questioned if it was a good investment. Would the new Star Wars films be as successful as the originals? It turned out they were – and then some! But which Star Wars movie under Disney made the most money? Forbes reports that 2015’s The Force Awakens was the biggest hit. It cost a substantial $535.5 million to make, but it earned over $2 billion worldwide, giving Disney a profit of more than $500 million. And that doesn’t even include money made from merchandise.
With The Force Awakens, the Star Wars franchise was successfully revived after a decade-long hiatus since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. Many fans had lost hope that Episodes VII-XI would ever be made. The film’s release, promising to continue the story of the original trilogy’s characters, quickly became a major cultural moment. Historically, the first film in each Star Wars trilogy has been the most financially successful – A New Hope topped the charts for the original films, and The Phantom Menace did the same for the prequels.
When it comes to profit, Solo: A Star Wars Story performed the worst, actually losing $103 million. While The Rise of Skywalker earned over a billion dollars worldwide, its massive $490 million production cost resulted in a relatively small profit of just $48 million. However, Lucasfilm earns significantly more money from Star Wars merchandise and licensing deals than from the films themselves. Considering everything – toys, clothes, theme park attractions, and the movies – Disney has made over $12 billion from the Star Wars brand. Regardless of opinions about the newer films, the overall financial success of Star Wars under Disney is undeniable.
