There’s been a lot of excitement among DC fans about the upcoming Batman sequel, but director Matt Reeves has stated that Sofia Falcone, a character played by Cristin Milioti in the popular series ‘The Penguin,’ won’t be in ‘The Batman: Part II’.
The announcement arrives as production begins on the next Batman movie, featuring Robert Pattinson as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell returning as the Penguin.
Look, Cristin Milioti isn’t appearing in this season, and honestly, it wasn’t a creative decision. By the time we really dug into the script and got into production, her character just didn’t organically fit. But let me be clear: I think she’s a phenomenal actress, and I wouldn’t rule out seeing her involved down the line.
Keanu Reeves was incredibly impressed with the actress’s performance and Lauren’s work developing the character. He’d love to work with her again, but she isn’t heavily featured in this particular story. Reeves explained they were already far into the plot when they considered including her, and adding her at that point could have disrupted the existing narrative they were building.
He explained that sometimes they have ideas they like, but they don’t work with the overall direction of the story.
The next Batman movie is planned for release on October 1, 2027. Matt Reeves will return to direct and write the film with Mattson Tomlin.
Following the story of ‘The Batman’ and what happened with The Penguin, the new film will delve deeper into the crime and conflict that plague Gotham City. Production was put on hold due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and director Matt Reeves wanted to ensure the script was just right – it was finally finished in June. Shooting is scheduled to begin in January 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England.
Reeves discussed plans for the future of the Batman universe, including a potential second season of ‘The Penguin’ series. He explained that getting the movie ready for production has been the main focus, but now that’s underway, they can seriously start discussing further storylines and character development he’s been envisioning since the beginning.
We’re open to a second season, but only if we find a story that’s as good or better than the first. Without a compelling story, neither I, nor Lauren, nor Colin would be interested in continuing. We’re definitely interested in doing more, but it has to be the right project.
I got all my Batman questions answered by Matt Reeves at the Emmys! He talked about what’s next for Cristin Milioti’s character and whether we’ll see more seasons of The Penguin. Thanks to Joshua Horowitz for the interview!

Reeves acknowledged he doesn’t handle the business side of DC projects, but expressed enthusiasm for ideas he’s eager to pursue.
By the end of The Penguin’s first season, Ozz Cobb becomes the most powerful figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld. Meanwhile, Sofia Falcone is once again committed to Arkham Asylum, having been hired by Catwoman for some unknown purpose.
Despite fan expectations, the director confirmed that the character won’t be featured in the next Batman movie. However, he suggested there’s still a possibility for her story to continue in future projects set in the Batman world, like spin-offs or new adventures.
