Since 2018, the well-known collaboration between Nike and designer Riccardo Tisci had been on hold – until now. But instead of the series of sneakers we’ve seen before, their rekindled partnership has produced a new item: a $500 USD leather handbag called “The Mercer Bag.
For the Nike SS25 collection, an understated Italian-made bag emerges, differing from Riccardo Tisci’s previous roles at Givenchy and Burberry with a complete black pebble leather body. Unlike his past designs, the Nike logo is discreetly embossed on the front flap, while Tisci’s metal R.T. mark is attached to the bag corner and strap. Additional golden hardware makes it easy to detach and adjust the matching strap elsewhere in the design.
In 2014, Tisci and Nike began their partnership with a collection of Air Force 1 shoes featuring jacquard ankle straps. Over time, they introduced updated versions of the Nike Air Cast 1, NikeLab Dunk Lux High, Flyknit sneakers, an Air Zoom Legend boot, and more. Their latest collaboration in 2018 involved releasing a mid-top Air Max 97 and a high-top Air Force 1 shoe.
Despite maintaining a subtle approach in their creative expressions, the decision to collaborate on a high-end bag marks a significant shift in the fashion industry, particularly within the menswear sector, since 2018. Although sneakers remain popular among younger consumers, there has been a noticeable rise in spending on luxury bags over the past few years. The RealReal’s 2024 report indicates that searches for men’s handbags increased by an astounding 900% year-on-year last year, signifying a trend that has gradually emerged as more and more men have adopted high-end bags as part of their style.
Concurrently, Nike has faced challenges in maintaining interest due to the excessive visibility of popular sneakers and frequent complaints about a perceived lack of innovation. Notably, Nike has teamed up with Kim Kardashian’s shapewear line, dubbed NikeSKIMS, as an effort to strengthen its connection with female customers.
It seems that the unexpected unveiling of the Mercer Bag could be interpreted as an element of a broader plan aimed at extending reach, while also capitalizing on its high-end pricing. In a similar vein, Nike has ventured into luxury territory with their collaboration with designer Jacquemus, introducing a handbag shaped like the Swoosh logo, retailing for $400 USD at the Nike online store. This could be the beginning of a strategy blending luxury and sportswear originating from the Oregon-based company.

Although details about where the Mercer Bag by Nike and Riccardo Tisci will be available are limited, it’s scheduled to hit stores on March 1st at selected retailers. Keep an eye on TopMob for updates regarding this handbag launch and possible future expansions of the collection.
