On a particularly outstanding morning, Casey Bloys, HBO Max’s content chief, was thrilled as their collective platform received an unprecedented 142 Emmy nominations – the greatest number of nods in the history of the company.
In a conversation, Bloys shared that his head of awards, Austin O’Malia, had prepared him for various results by saying, “If he feels good, I feel good.” This optimistic sentiment proved accurate as several shows received significant recognition. Leading the way was “The Penguin” with 24 nominations, closely followed by “The White Lotus” with 23. “The Last of Us” and “Hacks” each received 16 nods, while “The Pitt” garnered 13.
Among the much-discussed aspects of “The Last of Us” is the departure of Neil Druckmann from the series. In response to inquiries concerning this shift from HBO’s perspective, Bloys stated that it was beneficial to have Neil contribute at the project’s onset.
According to Bloys, Neil expressed that his motivation for working on “The Last of Us” came after completing “Chernobyl,” stating to Craig, “What do you want to do next?” The answer was “The Last of Us,” which held significant appeal due to Craig’s enthusiasm for the project. Bloys also sympathized with Neil’s busy schedule at Naughty Dog, where he develops video games, explaining why Neil had to prioritize other projects.
Despite any concerns, Bloys remains optimistic about the show’s trajectory, expressing, “I feel he’s provided us with a strong foundation for the series. Clearly, Craig is an expert, so I think we’re in capable hands. Frankly, there’s no cause for concern.
Moving forward, executive producer Bloys has announced that Season 3 of the show is set for release in 2027. At this point, it’s undecided whether the upcoming season will be divided into two separate seasons or one extended season. Regarding this, Bloys stated, “Craig is still figuring things out… I’m letting Craig take the lead on that decision.
The series closely adheres to the narrative of the video game, which means certain characters might be absent or reduced in frequency, like Pedro Pascal’s character no longer being a mainstay and some ambiguity surrounding Bella’s role. However, Bloys views this as an acceptable trade-off, stating, “‘The title benefits significantly from the video game, and now the first two seasons have solidified their identity.’” Additionally, he admires productions that delve into diverse storylines.
In the second series of “The Last of Us,” critics showered it with hearty acclaim. On evaluation platforms, it earned top marks and was widely regarded as an impressive follow-up that maintained the powerful acting and authentic feel of the initial season. Many concurred that it redefined the bar for video game adaptations.
Audience members praised the action sequences, direction, performances, stage layout, and script of the production. Yet, a few pointed out that the plot seemed to rush through certain sections, leaving some aspects seemingly incomplete.
Critics were impressed by the seamless collaboration between the production crews and the skillful direction of each episode, drawing parallels between the exciting action sequences and standout moments from well-known series and films.
The strong bond shared by the main characters was emphasized as a major asset, despite some viewers feeling it wasn’t as prevalent as in the initial season. Critics applauded the show’s visual aesthetic and creative world-building, although they did note a few discrepancies in the series’ setting.
