‘The Goonies 2’ is on the Move: Writer Shares Promising Update

Enthusiasts of the 1985 cult film “The Goonies” now have something to look forward to! Finally confirming years of rumors, a follow-up movie is being actively produced.

Recently, Potsy Ponciroli, the scriptwriter, provided an update during a Deadline gathering at the Venice Film Festival. He mentioned that the project is progressing positively and heading towards the correct path.

He shared that the initial script version was warmly accepted, and he’s nearly finished (approximately 95%) with the second draft.

Ponciroli acknowledged and understood the doubts among fans regarding another Goonies film, given its iconic status. He himself is a die-hard fan of the original, considering it his all-time favorite movie. Instead of revisiting The Goonies, he envisions a continuation that feels like a natural extension for one of its most ardent supporters. In other words, this is the sequel he desires to see as a passionate admirer of the franchise.

He added that a director has not been announced and it’s unclear when production will begin.

For quite some time, there have been occasional conversations about making a second installment. The director of the first film, Richard Donner, has voiced his optimism that a new chapter might feature as many members of the original cast as feasible.

As the years passed, certain actors such as Corey Feldman had their reservations, yet others like Sean Astin and Ke Huy Quan remained optimistic about the project. This year’s reunion with writer Chris Columbus prompted Feldman to say, “I can only suggest that we gather everyone. Everyone looks great. Sean’s doing well. Josh is doing well too. We all still look good and are still alive. The Goonies never give up…There’s always a chance.

Quan mentioned that a sequel is one question he’s often asked, and he’d be delighted if it came to fruition.

This version uses more conversational language and eliminates some technical terms (“get” and “happen”) while still conveying the original meaning.

In February, it was confirmed that the follow-up production is already in progress. This project is being led by Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, and Chris Columbus for Amblin Entertainment, while Lauren Shuler Donner takes on the role of executive producer.

To me, it’s thrilling to witness the ongoing adventure of this timeless tale, a story that holds a unique spot in cinematic history – none other than “The Goonies”. Seeing the creators handle the sequel thoughtfully and reverently towards the original is nothing short of reassuring.
