The journey of adapting Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” into a movie has been marked by delays and obstacles. As early as 1991, there were initial attempts to create a film from it, but these fell through. In 2013, Goyer revived the idea for a motion picture, with both he and Gaiman prepared to produce it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also on board, potentially as both the lead actor and director.
In 2016, the project started to unravel when Gordon-Levitt departed because of creative differences. This led Warner Bros. to reconsider their approach, deciding that a TV series would be more appropriate rather than a film. Netflix joined the production in June 2019, and filming for the first season took place from late 2020 to August 2021.
The first season debuted on August 5, 2022, and all ten episodes became available simultaneously. Two weeks afterward, an unexpected extra episode was released. Critics applauded its visuals, performances, and adherence to the source comics. In November 2022, Netflix announced a second season, but in January 2025, it was confirmed that Season 2 would be the concluding chapter of the show’s run.
The second season has been divided into two separate instalments. The first part, known as Volume 1, was released on July 3, 2025. Currently, fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Volume 2, set for July 24. Lastly, the bonus episode will be accessible on July 31.
Filming for the second season commenced at Shepperton Studios in the UK during June 2023. However, production halted momentarily due to a SAG-AFTRA strike that occurred over the summer. Later in November 2023, Neil Gaiman announced that filming had resumed, and by August 2024, it was wrapped up.
Despite moments where it wanders like a hazy memory, Tom Sturridge’s captivating portrayal keeps this fantasy series grounded and impactful.” On Metacritic, it received a score of 61 out of 100 from 11 reviews, indicating generally positive appraisals.
Enthusiasts of both the TV series and the initial comic books can’t wait to find out how the tale of Dream unfolds. The unveiling of the trailer for Volume 2 by Netflix hints at an impactful end to a series that has taken four decades to materialize.
