Reports suggest Forza Horizon 5 has sold over five million copies on PlayStation 5, which raises the question of how other popular Microsoft-owned games are performing. According to Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics on LinkedIn, they’re doing quite well. For instance, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is said to have sold 1.1 million copies on PS5.
The biggest difference is that it wasn’t initially released only on Xbox. Interestingly, about half of all PlayStation 5 players seemed to play for around 15 hours. It makes you think if problems with how the game ran, or any bugs, might have stopped people from playing longer.
A key launch for Xbox was Gears of War Reloaded, an upgraded version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. It sold 572,000 copies on PlayStation 5, but only 202,000 on Xbox and 73,000 on Steam. Interestingly, Alinea suggests this lower sales figure on Xbox isn’t necessarily a bad sign. They believe the popularity of Xbox Game Pass – with 1.6 million players accessing Reloaded through the subscription – likely reduced the number of copies people needed to buy.
Considering Gears of War, particularly the original, has been an Xbox exclusive for years, many PlayStation players were experiencing the game for the first time now. It’s still unclear if this introduction will encourage them to play Gears of War: E-Day when it releases later this year.
