I have to say, it’s fascinating watching Tatyana Ali’s career. She practically grew up in front of us! Starting with a sweet gig on Sesame Street, she really became a household name as Ashley Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. What’s really special is that so many of us watched her grow up right alongside her character – it felt like we were all experiencing it together.
I have to say, even at 46, Laverne Cox is still stunning! I loved seeing her post for Spirit Day with GLAAD – she looked incredible in that lavender suit, so polished with her hair pulled back and simple necklace. Someone commented she looked ‘very presidential,’ and her reply – that she ‘definitely look[ed] like I’m running for office’ – was just perfect! She’s amazing.

Once The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air concluded, Ali completed high school, went on to graduate from Harvard University, and continued her acting career. While often overlooked, she remained active in the public sphere throughout this time.
I recently learned something really interesting about the making of Jawbreaker! Apparently, when they filmed it back in ’99, I found out I wasn’t the only one dealing with high school drama on set. Ali shared that she was the only one still in high school at the time and was actually being bullied by another actress. It’s so cool to hear that Rose McGowan stepped in and told her off right in front of everyone! Ali said she’ll always be grateful for that, and Rose’s response was just a perfect heart emoji – basically saying she’d do it all over again to defend Ali. It’s a sweet little story about a supportive moment on set that I loved hearing about.

In March, a fun video of Ali and Will Smith recreating a scene from the original “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” pilot went viral. Inspired by a dance trend set to Doechii’s song “Anxiety,” the clip featured a Walkman and brought a wave of nostalgia to longtime fans.
Becoming a mother has profoundly impacted Ali’s life. She and her husband, Dr. Vaughn Rasberry, have two sons: 9-year-old Edward Aszard Rasberry and 7-year-old Alejandro Vaughn Rasberry. Her first birth was difficult, and her son needed care in the NICU.
After a difficult experience, she found support with the Black Mamas Matter Alliance, which inspired her to start Baby Yams, a sewing project. She shared with First For Women that her son needed four days in the NICU due to the hospital experience. Last year, she launched the brand, crafting 50 blankets by hand using fabrics from Ghana. The blankets quickly sold out, and all the proceeds were donated to train midwives and doulas.
Tatyana Ali has remained a public figure and consistently uses her influence to make a positive impact, continuing to inspire people of all ages.
