- Takahiro Miyashita announces his return to lead Number(N)ine, following his departure in 2009
- Announced via the brand’s new Instagram account, the founder’s return also hints at a revival of rock and grunge-inspired aesthetics
Takahiro Miyashita is making a comeback as the creative leader of his own brand, Number(N)ine, as announced on their official Instagram. The post, featuring plain background with simple white text saying “BAÇK, I MISSED YOU” and “NUMBER(N)INE BY TAKAHIRO MIYASHITA”, suggests a much-awaited return to the bold attitude and rock-inspired style that characterized Number(N)ine during its influential period in the late ’90s and early ’00s.
During its operation from 1997 to 2009, Miyashita’s pioneering tenure at the brand significantly positioned it as a revolutionary force in Japanese fashion, earning a devoted fanbase reminiscent of a cult. Number(N)ine garnered acclaim for its emotionally resonant, music-influenced designs that skillfully combined punk, grunge, and meticulous tailoring. Following his departure, Miyashita embarked on a more solo, self-directed creative journey, which he continued with TheSoloist brand. Recently, Miyashita has also revealed his decision to step away from TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloist.
From its founding in 1997 to its closure in 2009, Miyashita’s work at the brand made it a groundbreaking force in Japanese fashion with an intense fanbase. Number(N)ine was admired for its collections that were heavily influenced by music and successfully combined punk, grunge, and detailed tailoring. After he left, Miyashita pursued a more independent creative course, which he continued through TheSoloist brand. Only two months ago, Miyashita also disclosed his decision to leave TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloist.
His going back to Number 9, now managed by different owners, marks a significant shift in strategy that strengthens once more the bond between the designer and the renowned brand he initially founded.
