Fans on Rotten Tomatoes have given the new Superman version, by James Gunn, a stunningly high score of 96%, whereas professional critics have lowered their rating to 84%. This indicates a noticeable gap in opinion regarding this reboot.
What happened?
Critics score dips
In my earlier discussion, I mentioned that when the initial wave of reviews landed on Rotten Tomatoes, the Superman score was nothing short of spectacular, soaring high at a whopping 91%.
However, now with 198 reviews, the Superman Rotten Tomatoes Score from critics has dipped to 84%.
The given number seems to align better with “Guardians of the Galaxy” volumes 2 and 3, as opposed to the initial two Christopher Reeve movies, which boast impressive ratings of 86% and 88%.
Fan score to the moon
In line with what I expressed in my piece discussing box office trends, I foresaw a remarkably high initial rating for the Superman score on Rotten Tomatoes from fans.
On Tuesday evening, Warner Bros. previewed their upcoming screenings on Amazon, which naturally attracted a multitude of enthusiastic fans – both boys and girls who embrace their superhero spirit. I happened to be among the audience, and I noticed some spectators sporting capes. It’s evident that they will enjoy it.
With over 1000 verified reviews, the Superman Rotten Tomatoes fan score is at a near-perfect 96%.
Should the fan score maintain its strength, it signifies a significant victory for Gunn, as positive word-of-mouth will fuel curiosity and ticket purchases. This is precisely what his Superman requires to thrive. Warner Bros. also wisely tailored their marketing approach towards general audiences rather than just die-hard fans.
The current 96% is also higher than all three of Gunn’s Guardians movies at Marvel. Wow.
