Christopher Nolan is making a movie based on the ancient story of The Odyssey. His film is an action-packed fantasy take on Homer’s famous poem, telling the story of King Odysseus and his perilous voyage back home after the Trojan War.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus in a new film about his epic journey home to his wife, Penelope, and his fight to regain his throne. The movie also features a fantastic cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. Christopher Nolan is producing the film with his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company, Syncopy.
Universal Pictures greenlit the film in December 2024. Christopher Nolan started writing the screenplay in March 2024 and reached an agreement with the studio by October. Matt Damon was set to star in February 2025. From February to August of that year, the movie was filmed in several countries around the world, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara.
At an estimated $250 million, The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan’s most costly film yet. It’s also the first movie he’s shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, which should make it a stunning visual experience.
Recently, Empire magazine shared a fresh look at the movie, revealing new artwork and giving fans a first preview of its grand scope and impressive goals.

As a huge cinema fan, I’m absolutely thrilled! Empire magazine just dropped the first details and images of Christopher Nolan’s new film, #TheOdyssey, and it looks incredible.
