During an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, Stephen Miller, a former policy advisor to Donald Trump, strongly criticized actor Robert De Niro. Miller referred to De Niro as “a sad, broken old man” and belittled his recent film choices, pointing out a string of unsuccessful movies over the past few decades.
According to Miller, Robert De Niro has been in a decades-long slump, delivering a string of unsuccessful and embarrassing films. He believes De Niro appears frustrated and diminished, largely due to a lack of strong projects for over 30 years, and seems to be actively damaging his own reputation with each new appearance.

Robert De Niro seems deeply unhappy, and many believe it stems from a long period – around three decades – where he hasn’t starred in any truly successful or memorable films. It’s been a remarkably long run of unsuccessful projects for him.
For as long as I’ve been an adult, this actor has consistently made terrible movies and is seen as a joke by everyone who knows him – his family, friends, and community. He’s a broken person, and no one takes him or his opinions seriously. Miller certainly didn’t hold back when criticizing him.
The remarks followed an appearance on MSNBC where Robert De Niro strongly criticized Stephen Miller, calling him a “Nazi” and drawing a comparison to Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s propaganda chief. De Niro stated, “He is a Nazi! Yes, he is, and he’s Jewish. He should be ashamed of himself.”
Robert De Niro’s latest movies haven’t performed well in theaters, suggesting his star power might not be as strong as it used to be.
His most recent five films have lost a significant amount of money for the studios that made them, based on reports from industry experts and box office analysts.
Several recent films starring Ezra have not performed well financially. Ezra (2023) lost $7 million, while About My Father (2023) lost an estimated $40 million. His action movie, Tin Soldier (2025), reportedly lost $45 million, and received a very low score on Rotten Tomatoes, with only 9% of critics giving it a positive review. The Alto Knights (2025) experienced the biggest loss, totaling $35 million.
Even movies that critics loved weren’t always successful at the box office. For example, Martin Scorsese’s 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon received a lot of praise and award nominations, but it still didn’t make as much money as expected.
While the movie earned $158.8 million globally, experts at Variety estimated it needed between $500 and $600 million in ticket sales to be profitable with a typical theatrical release. Although Apple helped offset some of the costs through rentals, Deadline Hollywood reports the film still lost approximately $215 million.
