Who gets cast in a movie can completely change an actor’s career, for better or worse. It’s surprising how many famous movie roles were first offered to other big stars who turned them down. Sometimes actors are too busy, but other times they just don’t recognize a great script. These decisions can haunt actors for years, as they miss out on becoming iconic and achieving huge success.
John Travolta

I’ve always been fascinated by how things could have been different in Hollywood! It’s incredible to think that John Travolta actually turned down the role of Forrest Gump. He chose to do Pulp Fiction instead, which, thankfully, really brought his career back to life. But then Tom Hanks stepped in as Forrest, and gave such an amazing performance – he even won an Oscar! Looking back, Travolta has admitted it wasn’t the best career move. And honestly, it’s hard to argue with that when you consider just how much of a classic Forrest Gump became – it’s one of the most loved and successful dramas ever made.
Will Smith

Will Smith turned down the chance to play Neo in ‘The Matrix’ because he didn’t fully grasp the idea behind the film’s innovative “bullet time” effect. He opted instead for ‘Wild Wild West,’ which wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences. Keanu Reeves then took on the role and became the star of a hugely successful franchise that revolutionized action movies. Smith has since said he wasn’t experienced enough as an actor to pull off the part at the time.
Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate turned down the lead role in ‘Legally Blonde’ after reading the first draft of the script. Having just finished playing a blonde character on ‘Married… with Children,’ she didn’t want to take on another similar role. Reese Witherspoon ultimately starred as Elle Woods and became a major star. Applegate has since said she wished she had taken the part, and has often complimented Witherspoon’s memorable performance.
Matt Damon

I still can’t believe Matt Damon turned down the lead role in ‘Avatar’! Apparently, James Cameron offered him ten percent of the box office – can you imagine?! It’s estimated that decision cost him around $250 million, because ‘Avatar’ ended up being the highest-grossing movie ever. Sam Worthington ended up getting the part and became a huge star, while Matt jokes about missing out on that massive payday whenever he’s interviewed. It’s seriously one of the biggest ‘what ifs’ in Hollywood history!
Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow was originally offered the lead female role, Rose DeWitt Bukater, in the movie ‘Titanic,’ but she decided not to take it. Kate Winslet then got the part, which launched her career and earned her an Oscar nomination. Paltrow has since said she regrets turning down the role. ‘Titanic’ went on to become a massive worldwide hit, remaining the highest-grossing film for more than ten years.
Al Pacino

You won’t believe this, but Al Pacino was actually offered the role of Han Solo! I read that he turned it down because he just didn’t get the script – it was all a bit confusing for him at the time. Thankfully, Harrison Ford stepped in and, well, the rest is history. It’s wild to think how different things could have been. Pacino has even joked that he basically launched Ford’s career by passing on a bunch of big roles back then. And ‘Star Wars’ itself? It completely changed the game, really kicking off the whole blockbuster era and making stars out of so many people involved.
Molly Ringwald

Molly Ringwald was first considered for the lead role in the movie ‘Pretty Woman,’ but she turned it down. The part then went to Julia Roberts, who wasn’t very well-known at the time. Roberts’ performance in the film instantly made her a star and one of the most highly-paid actresses in Hollywood. Ringwald has since thought about how her career might have been different if she had taken the role.
Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer didn’t feel comfortable with the intense violence and darkness of the script for ‘The Silence of the Lambs,’ so she declined the role of Clarice Starling. Jodie Foster then took on the part, and her performance as the strong-willed FBI trainee earned her a second Oscar. Pfeiffer has since said it was hard to leave such a compelling character. The film was a rare horror thriller to achieve widespread recognition at the Academy Awards.
Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds turned down the lead role in ‘Die Hard,’ which ultimately helped launch Bruce Willis’s career as a major action star. Reynolds later admitted he regretted missing out on this and other famous roles that might have changed the course of his career. ‘Die Hard’ became a hugely influential action movie and continues to be a classic of the genre.
Denzel Washington

Okay, so I remember when ‘Seven’ came out, everyone was talking about it – and especially that ending! But here’s a little movie trivia: Denzel Washington actually turned down the role Brad Pitt eventually made iconic. Apparently, he read the script and felt it was just too dark and disturbing for him at the time. He later confessed he regretted that decision, seeing what a powerful and well-made film it turned out to be. It just goes to show, sometimes the projects that scare you a little are the ones worth taking.
Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt had to decline the role of Black Widow in ‘Iron Man 2’ because she was already committed to another film project. Scarlett Johansson ultimately took the part and became a key character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than ten years. Blunt has often said she was really disappointed to miss out on the opportunity, as she was very enthusiastic about the role. It proved to be a career-defining part for Johansson, helping her become a globally recognized and successful actress.
Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman was offered the role of James Bond in ‘Casino Royale,’ but he decided to continue playing Wolverine instead. He was concerned the Bond scripts were becoming too dark and didn’t want to be committed to both the Bond and Wolverine franchises at the same time. Daniel Craig ultimately became the next Bond and brought a fresh take to the character. Jackman has since admitted he occasionally thinks about what might have happened if he’d taken the 007 role.
Sandra Bullock

I always thought Sandra Bullock would have been incredible as the lead in ‘Million Dollar Baby,’ but sadly, it just didn’t work out with her other commitments. Thankfully, Hilary Swank stepped in and absolutely blew everyone away – she deserved that second Oscar! Sandra herself has said she was thrilled for Hilary, but I can’t help but wonder what she would have brought to the role. The film went on to win so many awards, and it’s truly become a classic – a real gem in the world of sports movies.
Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts initially declined the lead role in ‘The Blind Side,’ a film based on the true story of a family who adopted a future football star. Sandra Bullock then took on the role and won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Leigh Anne Tuohy. Roberts had a history of turning down roles that later earned Oscars for other actresses, and this decision ultimately paved the way for Bullock to achieve significant critical success.
Mark Wahlberg

Okay, so this is a fascinating story. Apparently, Mark Wahlberg was offered the lead in ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ but he ultimately passed on it. He’s admitted he just wasn’t comfortable with the script’s, shall we say, intimate scenes. Looking back, it’s incredible to think Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal ended up taking those roles and both got Oscar nods! The film, of course, became a huge deal – critically acclaimed and a box office hit. Wahlberg has even said he recognized it was something special, even if it wasn’t the right project for him at that point in his career. It just goes to show how things can work out differently, and sometimes not taking a role can still lead to recognizing great art.
Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway was initially chosen to star in ‘Knocked Up,’ but she left the project because she disagreed with how certain scenes were being filmed. She believed a particular childbirth scene wasn’t needed for the comedic story. Katherine Heigl took her place, and the film became a major success, helping launch Heigl’s career as a rom-com star. Later, Hathaway said she’d grown and realized she might have been too inflexible in her thinking at the time.
Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio chose to star in ‘Titanic’ instead of ‘Boogie Nights’, a decision that ultimately made him a worldwide star. However, he’s said he really loved the script for ‘Boogie Nights’. Mark Wahlberg ended up playing the role and it helped launch his career as a respected actor, moving beyond his music background. DiCaprio has frequently said it’s one of the few roles he wishes he hadn’t turned down.
Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson was originally considered for the role of Michael Corleone in ‘The Godfather,’ but he declined, feeling an Italian actor would be more fitting for the part. Al Pacino ultimately took on the role and gave a performance now celebrated as one of cinema’s all-time greats. Though Nicholson went on to have a remarkable career, he missed the opportunity to be in a film many consider the greatest ever made. ‘The Godfather’ catapulted Pacino to fame and cemented his status as a leading actor of the New Hollywood movement.
Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sarah Michelle Gellar was initially considered for the main role in ‘Scream,’ but couldn’t take it because she was already committed to a television show. Neve Campbell ended up playing the part and became known as the iconic ‘final girl’ of the 90s horror boom. Gellar later appeared in one of the sequels, but she wasn’t the lead in the original hit movie. ‘Scream’ became a very successful horror franchise and led to several follow-up films.
Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford was initially offered the main role in ‘Schindler List’ but declined it, believing his fame would pull focus from the important story. Liam Neeson ultimately played Oskar Schindler and earned an Oscar nomination for his performance. Ford thought an actor less known to the public would lend more weight to the serious historical drama. Despite standing by his decision, the film went on to become a huge critical and cinematic achievement.
