STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY Trailer: Cadet Kisses, Stephen Colbert, & Villainous Paul Giamatti

To help us make sense of the trailer, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has also released the following synopsis:

As a critic, I recently checked out *STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY*, and it’s a really engaging look at the next generation of Starfleet officers. The show follows a group of bright-eyed cadets as they chase their dreams, learning the ropes at the Academy. We see them grow, forge friendships – and some intense rivalries – experience first loves, all while facing a dangerous new threat that could jeopardize everything. It’s a compelling story about what it takes to become a Starfleet officer, and it definitely delivers on the hope and optimism we expect from *Star Trek*.

The trailer for *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy* shows things heating up with romance – which makes sense, considering the intense environment of the Academy! We also get a quick introduction to the main characters. The show stars Holly Hunter as the Chancellor, along with Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard as the cadets. Other cast members include Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, and guest stars Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman, with recurring appearances by Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti.

The trailer reveals Paul Giamatti as the main villain, Nus Braka. He sets the story in motion by separating a mother from her son, Caleb Mir, who is the film’s central character. It’s interesting to note that Giamatti’s character is a hybrid of Klingon and Tellarite ancestry.

The trailer for *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy* looks promising! It seems Holly Hunter’s character, Chancellor Nahle Ake, might become a mentor figure for Caleb, offering a sense of family. The show also hints at a strong theme of found family, bringing together a diverse group of cadets – an awkward student, a privileged one, and a Klingon cadet (played by Karim Diané) – in this new *Star Trek* installment.

Stephen Colbert is joining the series as the Digital Dean of Students at Starfleet Academy! He’ll be delivering daily announcements to the academy’s students. Colbert says he’s excited to be part of a universe he’s always loved, and jokes that he’s happy to do it without the daily four-hour hair and makeup routine. He’ll appear when *Starfleet Academy* premieres, and encourages fans to enjoy the convention in the meantime. We love seeing this happen!

The new series, *Star Trek: Starfleet Academy*, will feature some beloved characters from past *Star Trek* shows, and the trailer gives us a glimpse of many of them. Tig Notaro returns as engineer Jett Reno, Mary Wiseman reprises her role as Sylvia Tilly, and Oded Fehr is back as Admiral Charles Vance, the head of Starfleet Academy – a role he previously played in *Star Trek: Discovery*. Plus, Robert Picardo is back as “The Doctor,” the holographic medic who first appeared in *Star Trek: Voyager* way back in 1995! He’s looking great, though – it doesn’t feel like that long ago!
