STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY Comics Coming This Spring (Exclusive)

For nearly 60 years, Star Trek has been explored not only on TV and in movies, but also in comic books. That tradition continues with a new 5-part comic series from IDW Entertainment, based on Paramount’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Called Lost Contact, the series is written by Layne Morgan and features art by Coralí España and Nora Serrano. Below, you can get a first look at the covers for the first issue and read a summary of the story.

The cover art is stunning, though the skull-shaped mountain is a bit unsettling. Still, we’re really looking forward to this new Star Trek story! We’re thrilled to exclusively reveal the official synopsis for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact. Here’s a description of this exciting new 32nd-century adventure following Academy cadets aboard the U.S.S. Athena:

Caleb, Genesis, Jay-Den, Kyle, and Tarima are all cadets at Starfleet Academy, the famous school that trains the Federation’s top officers. They each hope to one day command a starship, explore new cultures, or venture into uncharted space. But right now, they’re on a training exercise – a simple survey of a barren, low-oxygen planet. That is, until a massive storm cuts off communication with their instructors on the Athena, and they encounter something incredible: an alien! Now, they must rely on their Starfleet training and teamwork to survive first contact and escape the planet.

Writing for the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact comic was a dream come true for Layne Morgan. You can really feel his passion in this new Star Trek story. Here’s what Morgan had to say about becoming part of the Starfleet Academy team:

I’m incredibly honored to be working within the expansive world of Star Trek. That’s been the most thrilling aspect of this project for me. It’s my first time contributing to such a large and established franchise, and it’s a dream come true to work with a universe that has so much history, a dedicated fanbase, and countless stories. I especially enjoyed developing the characters at Starfleet Academy and exploring their potential within this new story and setting. I aimed to create a compelling problem for them that felt like a tribute to the classic TV I grew up with, and I hope Star Trek fans will appreciate that connection.

It’s easy to say, but I genuinely felt a lot of excitement while reading the scripts for Starfleet Academy as I prepared for this. It’s the perfect type of world for my writing, and the story, LOST CONTACT, just flowed from it. I’m really looking forward to others experiencing that same excitement, and I hope they connect with the cadets as much as I have.

Editor Cassandra Jones hints that this comic series has a lot to offer, including plenty of drama, misunderstandings, and exciting stories about life at Starfleet Academy. And like any great comic, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact boasts stunning artwork. The art style is beautifully painted, and even a quick look at the exclusive covers gives you a sense of what Jones means – it’s truly amazing.

STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY – LOST CONTACT isn’t just a loving nod to classic Star Trek stories; it also explores fresh ground with its focus on the cadets – their struggles and misunderstandings – and creatively experiments with storytelling techniques.

As a big movie fan, I’ve always admired Morgan’s ability to create really intricate stories about how people relate to each other, and the work of Espuna and Serrano just adds this beautiful, almost artistic touch that feels really special. Honestly, I think there’s a Star Trek episode out there for absolutely anyone, and this one? If you enjoy those heartfelt coming-of-age comics or even a good teen drama, I have a feeling you’ll really connect with it.

The first issue of the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – Lost Contact comic will be available on April 15th, shortly after the first season of the show finishes. Fans can pre-order the comic starting March 9th. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is currently streaming on Paramount+, and Lost Contact is the first official comic book based on the series. It’s a great way to experience more of the show’s unique world, and it will keep Star Trek fans entertained while they wait for season two next year.

This new Star Trek: Starfleet Academy comic is just the start of what’s coming! IDW is planning even more exciting Star Trek announcements to celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary this year. Keep checking back to stay up-to-date on all the new adventures!
