Square Enix invests in Vaultbreakers studio

The Danish game studio BetaDwarf has sealed a financial deal with Square Enix, which will support the continued creation of their cooperative PvPvE action role-playing game known as Vaultbreakers.

In Vaultbreakers, gamers delve into diverse maps, each tasked with unique missions. Simultaneously, other players may have different aims. This mix results in scenarios where combat or collaboration ensues based on the momentary objectives and threats at hand. Actions by one player can impact the goals of others, either directly or indirectly. Essentially, it’s as if someone blended a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) with an extract-and-shoot game.

Players have the freedom to embark on these missions either alone or accompanied by a companion, and they can utilize the resources they acquire during their journey to enhance their home base and advance their character levels.

In his own words, Hideaki Uehara from Square Enix stated that they are consistently on the hunt for exceptional games and skilled development teams. When he delved into Vaultbreakers, his enthusiasm was ignited by the interactive experience of collaborating with other gamers and discovering its immersive game environment. Following a visit to BetaDwarf and gaining insights into their ambitions and dedication, Square Enix chose to invest in them, aiming to facilitate the fulfillment of their vision and make this game accessible for players worldwide.

The CEO and game director of BetaDwarf, Steffen Kabbelgaard, expressed his enthusiasm: “Having Square Enix join us on our voyage is simply fantastic, offering a blend of expertise, skill, and resources. We’re well underway with our dream project Vaultbreakers; we boast a large, passionate community, and have conducted over 15 tests with more than 50,000 players who consistently help us improve. The extra support at this stage in production feels incredible. I can already envision how this partnership will propel us towards a successful conclusion rather than embarking on an uncertain journey — needless to say, I’m thrilled about our current circumstances!

The latest playtest for Vaultbreakers is currently happening on PC and will run until July 9, 2025.
