For the past eight years, GKIDS has teamed up with Fathom Entertainment to bring Studio Ghibli films back to movie theaters with Ghibli Fest. This yearly event shows popular Ghibli movies on the big screen, with options to watch in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English. If you’ve never seen Hayao Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed Spirited Away (2001), you’ll have another chance! It’s returning to cinemas October 18-22.
The beloved animated film *Spirited Away* tells the story of Chihiro, a 10-year-old girl, who gets lost with her parents in a mysterious, deserted village. When her parents are turned into pigs, Chihiro flees and discovers a magical bathhouse filled with spirits and demons. To protect herself from the powerful witch Yubaba, Chihiro takes a job at the bathhouse, hoping to find a way to turn her parents back into humans and return home.
Ghibli Fest typically screens one beloved film each month. In 2025 so far, fans have enjoyed screenings of *Kiki’s Delivery Service*, *The Secret World of Arrietty*, *My Neighbor Totoro*, *Grave of the Fireflies*, *Ponyo*, and recently, *Howl’s Moving Castle*. It’s been a strong lineup! The festival created quite a contrast by showing the deeply sad *Grave of the Fireflies* between the cheerful *Totoro* and *Ponyo*. The fest will conclude in November with Miyazaki’s latest film, the Academy Award-winning *The Boy and the Heron*.
