Space Available’s Jakarta Community Center Redefines Urban Well-Being

Summary

  • Space Available has transformed the Jakarta Community Center into a new sustainable hub
  • The renovated building uses over 11 tons of recycled plastic, blending circular design with traditional craftsmanship

The Bali-based eco-friendly design studio and brand, Space Available, has recently revealed its impressive Jakarta Community Center project. This latest venture in Jakarta is conceived not just as a physical structure, but as a tangible embodiment of their fundamental beliefs. Inspired by circular design and a commitment to the environment, the center seeks to cultivate a lively community around the values of sustainability.

First conceived by acclaimed Indonesian architect Andra Matin, this structure has seen numerous changes throughout its history, resulting in structural discrepancies and outdated features. The renovation project, however, was not just about restoring the building; it also sought to redefine its function. This transformation aims to revitalize Kemang’s cultural importance while encouraging collaboration and creativity.

The renovated facility boasts a versatile, dynamic interior, viewing it more as an expansive art installation than a rigid architectural structure. Over 11 metric tons of locally sourced plastic, intricately crafted by artisans throughout Indonesia, were employed to build the framework, furniture, and decorative accents. The exterior and interior designs highlight this inventive use of materials by blending sustainability with traditional artistry. Key areas feature a communal discussion area furnished with recycling machines, repair stations for upcycled garments, and handwoven furniture created using circular design concepts.

Reimagined architecturally, this hub serves as a sanctuary for self-care. Based on five main aspects – physical activity, mindfulness, education, audio therapy, and nutrition – it invites guests to participate in meditation classes, sound healing sessions, workshops, cultural events, and more. The premises feature a dedicated meditation space, sound library, reading area, a restaurant and bar focusing on medicinal cuisine, ensuring every section promotes meaningful experiences instead of typical shopping encounters. Regular events and educational programs breathe life into the venue, encouraging collaboration and community bonding.

The Community Center in Jakarta is located at Jl. Kemang Raya.8B 9, within the community of RT.9/RW.1, Bangka, Mampang Prpt., South Jakarta City, Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Indonesia.
