Okay, let’s talk Sofía Vergara. Even at 53, she’s still absolutely iconic on TV. It’s amazing to think it’s been almost twenty years since she first charmed us on Modern Family, and she’s still a force to be reckoned with. Her career is clearly going nowhere but up!
Sofia Vergara wasn’t first discovered in Hollywood. As a teenager, a photographer spotted her on a Colombian beach, which led to her appearing in a Pepsi commercial throughout Latin America. She then formally studied acting and gradually gained experience in TV and movies.
Sofia Vergara’s career took off in 2009 when she began playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the popular ABC sitcom, Modern Family. The show was a huge success and lasted for eleven seasons, making her a well-known star worldwide. Between 2010 and 2013, she received several Emmy nominations for her work. In 2012, Forbes reported she was the highest-earning woman on American television, bringing in $19 million. By 2015, her annual income was estimated at $28.5 million by Forbes.

Beyond winning awards, Modern Family truly made Sofia Vergara a star. She became widely recognized and used her newfound fame to secure lucrative partnerships with major brands, grace magazine covers, and even receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015. The show allowed her to expand her career beyond acting, leading to successful ventures like clothing lines, a furniture collection with Rooms To Go, eyewear, and fragrances. More recently, in 2023, she launched her beauty brand, Toty, and in 2024, she introduced Dios Mios Coffee, a brand dedicated to supporting women coffee farmers in Colombia.
Following the conclusion of Modern Family in 2020, Sofia Vergara took on new projects. She became a judge on America’s Got Talent that same year and has been a part of the show ever since. Two contestants she selected with her “golden buzzer” went on to win, helping her stay well-known and reach a wider audience.

In 2024, she achieved a significant career highlight with a Primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Griselda Blanco in the Netflix series, Griselda. This nomination was historic, making her the first Latina actress born in Latin America to be nominated in the lead actress category. While she didn’t win – Jodie Foster took home the award – she playfully quipped that she’d been “robbed” for the fifth time.
I’ve always been fascinated by her, not just for her incredible work on screen. Her life off-camera has been quite a journey too. She got married young and has a son named Manolo. She found love again with Joe Manganiello, and they were married for almost a decade before sadly divorcing earlier this year. It’s inspiring how she became a U.S. citizen, and she’s been so brave sharing her battle with thyroid cancer, which she faced when she was just in her twenties. But what really struck me was something she said about her brother’s struggle with addiction. She described watching him suffer for ten years as the ‘worst punishment,’ and it was incredibly moving and heartbreaking to hear.
Modern Family was a turning point for Vergara, significantly boosting her career. The show not only brought her financial security and worldwide recognition, but also gave her greater control over her professional life. While she was gaining traction before, Modern Family established her as a leading Latina actress in Hollywood, creating opportunities in film, television, and business that she continues to enjoy.
