As a dedicated fan with decades of following System of a Down (SOAD) and their unique blend of heavy metal and Armenian folk influences, this announcement of their summer 2025 stadium concerts has me absolutely ecstatic! It’s been far too long since we’ve had the opportunity to witness their powerful performances live. The lineup featuring Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones, Polyphia, and Wisp is nothing short of a dream come true for any nu-metal enthusiast.
System of a Down (SOAD) has unveiled plans for three historic stadium shows slated for summer 2025, which represents an unusual live outing for the Armenian-American alternative metal group. Notably, the band has remained largely dormant since their simultaneous releases in 2005 of albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize. However, their last creative work was released in late 2020 with the new tracks “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.
Over the past few years, System of a Down, famed for their politically-driven lyrics and fusion of heavy metal with Armenian folk music, have opted to prioritize impactful, select shows over widespread touring.
The mini-tour begins at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on August 28, with nu-metal legends Korn sharing headlining duties. Korn, who are known for pioneering the genre, are said to be working on their 15th studio album, which is rumored to return to their heavier musical origins.
On August 31st, Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) will perform at Soldier Field in Chicago, marking their sole U.S. show for the entire year. This concert is taking place during a packed European tour schedule for them.
Extra incentive to see these System of a Down/Korn performances
The grand finale is scheduled for September 3 at Toronto’s Rogers Stadium, where Deftones will perform. Renowned for their atmospheric, experimental approach, Deftones are expected to unveil a new album prior to the tour, which could hint at a revival of sorts in the “nu-metal” genre around 2025. Preceding all three shows will be Polyphia, an instrumental band that blends various genres, and Wisp, an up-and-coming act in the nu-gaze scene. These opening acts lend a progressive vibe to these concerts.
The long-anticipated shows started selling their tickets from Friday, December 13, with presales taking place during the previous days.
System of a Down (consisting of Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan) resumed their activities in 2011 but have primarily avoided extended tours. There’s been some debate as to why the band has largely remained inactive. Daron Malakian openly stated, “I don’t want to blame Serj for this — he’s my friend and someone I value highly — but I’m unsure of how to alter his perspective. We’ve all gathered, and we’ve had discussions, and he seems firmly entrenched in his way of thinking…
To put it simply: The band’s live shows are becoming more and more limited, which emphasizes the importance of their summer 2025 performances. At one time, they were contemplating a new lead singer, but despite their differences, they have managed to collaborate for live performances, be it due to love or professional commitment. This is what fans will be looking forward to in 2025.
