As a gamer who grew up during the golden era of hip-hop, I can’t help but feel nostalgic and downright elated with the news about Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre joining forces once again for Snoop’s upcoming album “Missionary”. It feels like going back to the arcade where I first dropped a quarter into that Street Fighter II machine, hearing those iconic beats and feeling the thrill of a fresh challenge.
The duo consisting of Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre are often regarded as the most prosperous rapper-producer team in hip-hop history, dating back to their collaboration in the early 90s. Incredibly, almost thirty years have passed since they released Snoop’s debut album Doggystyle, which was produced by Dre.
Currently, two renowned rappers from the past have reunited for Snoop’s forthcoming album titled “Missionary,” which is set to drop this year. In a recent conversation with Complex, they discussed their collaboration, and Dr. Dre mentioned that he has surpassed his previous work in terms of production.
Dre shared that it’s been three decades since they last collaborated on a full album. Over the years, there have been occasional songs and performances, but this time marks their first joint effort on an entire album. He expressed his satisfaction, stating it’s among the best work he’s ever produced, and he takes great pride in it.
Ever since the release of “Doggystyle”, Snoop Dogg has put out more than 20 albums, a combination of his solo efforts and collaborations. Despite teaming up with some of the most renowned producers in the music industry, the rapper from Long Beach maintains that no one can quite match Dr. Dre’s talent. He also expressed feelings of apprehension when it comes to performing songs produced by others that were originally made by Dr. Dre.
Snoop clarified that he prefers for anything he does separately from Dr. Dre to remain unknown to him. This is because Dre is overly critical and a perfectionist, as he put it. Instead of seeking his opinion on external projects, Snoop opted to collaborate with Dre on this specific project, allowing him to produce Snoop and provide the best possible experience.
Snoop Dogg shared that what he enjoys most about teaming up with Dr. Dre is the freedom to simply be an artist, as opposed to taking on additional roles during collaborations with others.
2023 saw HipHopDX declare that Doggystyle had sold over 4 million copies. Yet, when I was asked about my aims for Missionary in terms of album sales, I made it clear that wasn’t the objective I have in mind.
Instead, Snoop defined success as a sentiment listeners experience, such as when someone tells him their album helped them get through tough times. To be precise, Snoop revealed that he has always overlooked sales figures. In his words, “I didn’t focus on my achievements because I was always preparing for the next game.”
