Lorne Michaels has concluded his annual adjustments before the commencement of Saturday Night Live‘s 51st season. Despite his frequent mentions about a significant overhaul, it appears that things won’t vary much at Studio 8H. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, with the exception of Heidi Gardner, most long-standing cast members are set to return. Kenan Thompson will be back for his 18th season. Alongside him, Bowen Yang, Chloe Fineman, Ego Nwodim, and Mikey Day are all confirmed to be returning as well. As our Weekend Update co-anchors, Colin Jost and Michael Che will also continue their roles.
Approaching the start of its 51st season on October 4, SNL creator Lorne Michaels has completed his adjustments to the cast following a month-long break. Four performers from the previous season’s extensive ensemble were ultimately let go. After three seasons with the show, both Devon Walker and Michael Longfellow were dismissed, despite being promoted to the main cast in their most recent season. Emil Wakim was also released after a single promising season.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that the most significant departure from the show was Heidi Gardner, a beloved cast member who had been with us for eight seasons. It appeared she made the decision to move on independently. Nevertheless, let me clarify that SNL legend and recent guest star, Dana Carvey, has shared that Heidi’s choice to leave wasn’t hers but was dictated by the show’s creative team.
Additionally, the remaining cast members for Season 50 – Andrew Dismukes, James Austin Johnson, Sarah Sherman, Marcello Hernandez, Ashley Padilla, and Jane Wickline, will all be rejoining us as well.
Just as astonishing as Gardner’s release, it’s equally surprising that Saturday Night Live is set to start its 51st season with a larger cast than last year. The show has expanded its roster by adding four new members – Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson, and Veronika Slowikowska, while also promoting Ben Marshall from Please Don’t Destroy to the main cast.
Since joining Saturday Night Live in 2021, Marshal’s pre-recorded comedy sketches with his trio have been a regular feature. However, these segments will no longer air on SNL. John Higgins from Please Don’t Destroy has decided to leave the show before the new season, but he’s not leaving the trio. Instead, he’s venturing into other projects. Martin Herlihy will continue as a writer for the show.
Determine how many among this large number of cast members won’t return for season 52 of SNL, as revealed in the coming summer by Lorne Michaels during his annual cast shake-up.
