Skybound Developing ENERGON Animation Featuring TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE

Even though the new animated Transformers: ONE movie received positive reviews, it didn’t perform well in theaters, raising concerns about the future of the Transformers films. The last G.I. Joe movie, Snake Eyes, also didn’t succeed at the box office. However, these beloved Hasbro franchises aren’t down for the count just yet. Deadline reports that Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment is partnering with Hasbro Entertainment to create Energon Universe. This will be a mature animated series inspired by Kirkman’s comics, blending characters and storylines from Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Kirkman’s original series, Void Rivals. Joe Henderson, known for Lucifer, will be the showrunner.

The new series is expected to feel similar to Robert Kirkman’s hit show, Invincible, which streams on Prime Video, meaning it will likely be geared towards adult audiences and feature intense violence. Kirkman, a lifelong fan of Transformers and G.I. Joe, bought the comic book rights to both franchises in 2021. He then created Energon, a universe where Transformers, G.I. Joe, and his own comic Void Rivals all exist together. Launched in 2023, Energon has quickly become one of Hasbro’s most successful comics, and is now being offered to streaming services.

Energon is the lifeblood of the Transformers, and the continuing battle between the heroic Autobots and the villainous Decepticons has expanded beyond their home planet, Cybertron, and reached Earth. This conflict is the reason for the creation of both the G.I. Joe and Cobra organizations. The story also connects to the cosmic Sacred Ring from the ‘Void Rivals’ series and includes characters from the classic ‘M.A.S.K.’ franchise. With 7 million copies sold globally, this new animated series, aimed at adults, hopes to revitalize both the Transformers and G.I. Joe brands and bring them back into the mainstream. However, animated series are complex to create, so it will likely be a while before this one is released.
