Singer for iconic rock band from the 1970s threatens to quit (again)

As a gamer who grew up listening to the legendary rock band Journey, I can only imagine the pressure that Arnel Pineda must feel every time he steps onto the stage. It’s like being the backup character in a game and having to match up to the iconic hero, knowing full well that some fans will always prefer the original.

Imagine the experience of being the lead singer for a legendary rock group. You jet-set across the globe, performing for countless adoring fans, and every show you deliver must be flawless – this could very well be the only impression many people have of your band, etching itself permanently into their memories. The weight of expectation is tangible.

For a backup or additional singer in an iconic band, it’s generally accepted that they can’t outshine the original vocalist, as fans are typically attached to them. However, there are exceptions, like Steve Perry of Journey, who is admired by many as one of the greatest singers in music history. At his best, Perry was capable of hitting extremely high notes effortlessly and expressing himself with great ease.

From 2007 onwards, Arnel Pineda has primarily served as the lead vocalist for Journey. A significant factor behind this is that he had an uncanny resemblance in his voice to Perry before he was fluent in English. In a bid to replace Perry, Pineda’s audition left everyone astonished.

Arnel Pineda threatens to quit Journey again

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve got to say that despite the buzz on social media about Pineda, there are still fans yearning for Perry’s return. Back in 2014, even Pineda admitted that if the band and Perry ever decided to reunite, he would graciously step aside. But as of now, it seems like that dream is still just a fantasy in the air.

Over time, Pineda faced issues with hearing and pitch consistency during concerts. To help him maintain his tune, the band reduced the stage volume. However, an unfortunate incident took place at Rock in Rio in September, which drew harsh criticism on social media. He was noticeably off-key, and even took to social media to express his apologies for the performance.

Additionally, he took things a notch higher on his Facebook post. He declared that if a million people commented “GO” on the post discussing the Rock in Rio controversy, he would indeed depart from the group, allowing Journey to find a new vocalist. At present, however, only 7,900 individuals have responded, with many encouraging him to stay put.

It’s quite disheartening to note that only around 8,000 people engaged in the discussion. If Taylor Swift had posed the same question on her platforms, it’s safe to say that countless fans would have chimed in. The truth is, Journey has lost its original relevance and now serves more as a karaoke rendition of their 70s glory days.
