Sigourney Weaver suggested she might reprise her role in the *Alien* franchise while appearing at a New York Comic Con panel with the original cast.
The event honored the popular film series by reuniting Sigourney Weaver with her fellow cast member from the original 1979 movie, Veronica Cartwright.
Sigourney Weaver revealed that producer Walter Hill developed a detailed 50-page outline imagining what happened to her character, Ellen Ripley, after previous events. She described the writing as “remarkable,” explaining it portrays a world that often overlooks or marginalizes those who attempt to protect others.
Sigourney Weaver said she hadn’t considered returning to the role, feeling the character deserved a break. She was impressed with the first 50 pages of a new story written by Walter Hill and is considering collaborating with him to develop the rest of it. Weaver also confirmed she’d discussed the possibility of the project with representatives from either Fox or Disney.
Cartwright shared memories of the original *Alien* film with Weaver, discussing how the studio didn’t initially believe in its potential. She also remembered the audience’s shocked reaction to the now-famous chestburster scene when the movie first came out.
Cartwright explained that the show didn’t have a formal premiere. He ended up watching it alone at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, and was incredibly impressed, saying, ‘Nobody had seen anything like it.’
The *Alien* series is still going strong. The latest movie, *Alien Romulus*, was released in 2024, and the first season of the Hulu series *Alien: Earth*, created by Noah Hawley, just finished airing. As for Sigourney Weaver, she’s currently working on another science fiction project – she’ll be in next summer’s *Star Wars* film, *The Mandalorian and Grogu*.
The possibility of continuing Ripley’s story is thrilling. With Sigourney Weaver potentially returning and Walter Hill adding new material, it sounds like the creators are carefully building on the original film while also venturing into fresh ideas. This is great news for fans of the series!
