The hit series Shōgun, which started as a limited series but quickly gained massive popularity, has been renewed for three full seasons! The announcement for seasons two and three came in January 2025, and in April, it was confirmed that Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis would reprise their roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, respectively. Now, details have been released regarding when production for season two will begin, as well as the returning and new cast members joining Sanada and Jarvis. Here’s the latest news about Shōgun season two.
Shōgun Season 2 Welcomes Back Returning Cast Members
While Lord Toranaga and John Blackthorne are central to the story, the show also features a strong supporting cast. Season two will bring back familiar faces including Fumi Nikaidô as Ochiba, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, Hiroto Kanai as Omi, Yoriko Dôguchi as Kiri, Tommy Bastow as Alvito, Yuko Miyamoto as Gin, Eita Okuno as Saeki, and Yuka Kouri as Kiku.
Unfortunately, Tadanobu Asano’s character, Yabushige, won’t be back. We really enjoyed Asano’s performance and hoped to see him in the second season of Shōgun, but his character died in season one.
Shōgun Season 2 Introduces New Cast to Its Epic World
The new season of Shōgun will feature several new actors joining the cast, including Asami Kizukawa as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito, and Jun Kunimura as Gōda. Details about these characters and their specific roles are currently being kept under wraps.
Behind the Scenes of Shōgun Season 2
Season two of Shōgun will see the return of directors Hiromi Kamata (episode 6 of season one) and Takeshi Fukunaga (episode 7 of season one). Joining them will be Anthony Byrne (known for FX’s Say Nothing), Kate Herron (Loki), and Justin Marks, who will each direct episodes in the new season.
Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente, and Sofie Somoroff wrote the second season of Shōgun.
Shōgun Season 2 Synopsis

I’m really excited for Shōgun Season 2, but it’s a little nerve-wracking too! The first season followed the amazing book by James Clavell so closely, but now they’re heading into uncharted territory. Here’s what I’ve been able to find out about what’s coming up:
I was completely hooked from the first season! It centers around Lord Toranaga, brilliantly played by Sanada, as he faces incredible opposition from his rivals. Then this stranded English pilot, Blackthorne, shows up – Cosmo Jarvis does an amazing job – and unexpectedly gives Toranaga the key information he needs to turn the tide. It really sets the stage for this huge, epic civil war that will shape the future!
The second part of Shōgun picks up ten years later, continuing the story of the two men whose lives have become connected by fate, all based on historical events.
Shōgun Season 2 Confirms January Production Start
Filming for season two of Shōgun is starting soon! Just a year after the announcement, production will begin in January. You can currently watch the first season of Shōgun on Hulu.
