It’s quite possible that Megan Moroney merely read the script presented to her on the teleprompter. She didn’t compose the introduction for the award she handed out at the 2025 American Music Awards; however, it became evident from her speech that the presentation had not been rehearsed with Shaboozey.
In a previous turn of events, the two individuals were bestowing the honor for the preferred country duo or group (which ultimately went to Dan + Shay). Prior to disclosing the nominees and the victor, Moroney made a statement suggesting that the Carter Family originated country music. It appeared that the individual who penned those words might not have had a comprehensive understanding of country music’s history.
This musical style can be traced back to the 1800s, but it has evolved over time and now leans more towards a mix of country pop and country-rock. The roots of country music are intricate, stemming from a blend of European folk melodies and African American folk music rhythms.
Shaboozey’s surprised look at Megan Moroney speaks for millions
Country music as we know it today wouldn’t exist or be as delightful to its many fans without the contributions of Black musicians.
It’s misleading and slightly prejudiced to attribute the origin of country music solely to the Carter Family, who began their musical career in the 1920s. While it’s true that some aspects of country music may have a more recent blemish due to certain country radio stations refusing to play songs from Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” album.
However, Shaboozey, a talented Black country musician, wasn’t taking Moroney’s comments lying down. Instead, he chose to express his disapproval without uttering a word. A telling look and a brief, amused chuckle were all that he needed to convey his feelings.
It’s important to note that Moroney likely wasn’t expressing her personal opinions during the award show. Presenters at such events primarily focus on presenting awards; they do not deliver speeches or write the content beforehand.
Unfortunately for Moroney, she often spoke on behalf of someone who, unintentionally perhaps, conveyed a widely held perspective. To put it simply, there’s a common belief that country music was exclusively created and enjoyed by white people. However, this is historically inaccurate. Fortunately, we have musicians like Shaboozey who help correct these misconceptions and broaden our understanding of the genre.
