Sequel to Highly Polarizing 2019 Supernatural Horror Gets Greenlight After Years of Delays; Filming Begins

Production has begun on the sequel to the 2019 horror film, The Curse of La Llorona, titled The Revenge of La Llorona. Jay Hernandez (from Magnum P.I.) and Monica Raymund (known for Chicago Fire) will star in the movie, continuing the story from the first film.

Raymond Cruz is back as the curandero from the original movie, and he’s joined by newcomers Edy Ganem, Martín Fajardo, Acston Luca Porto, and Avie Porto. Jeff Pierre also stars in the film, which is currently being shot in Buffalo.

The team behind the film—Emile Gladstone, Gary Dauberman, and James Wan—is back for this installment. However, a new director and writer have joined the project. Santiago Menghini, a Canadian director who previously made the acclaimed short film *Milk* and the 2021 horror movie *No One Gets Out Alive*, is taking the helm.

The script was written by Sean Tretta, who had previously collaborated with Wan on Creature from the Black Lagoon. The sequel faced several delays, even being put on hold in early 2024, probably because of money problems. Current work on the film represents a major comeback for the project.

The movie *The Curse of La Llorona* earned $123.1 million globally with a production cost of just $9 million, making it a financially successful film.

The film debuted at number one in the U.S. and Canada, earning $26.5 million during its opening weekend. Notably, almost half of the audience identified as Hispanic. However, critics were divided, giving it a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 41 out of 100 on Metacritic. Audience reaction was somewhat more positive, with a B− grade from CinemaScore and 48% of viewers saying they would definitely recommend it.

The next installment, The Revenge of La Llorona, will continue the spooky and supernatural story fans love, but with a new director and writer. It will be fascinating to see their take on the series, especially considering the first film received a mixed critical response despite being popular with audiences.
