There’s been quite a buzz surrounding the latest Superman film, long before its release in cinemas nationwide. The debate kicked off following director James Gunn’s remark that Superman is essentially an immigrant, during an interview with The Times of London.
In his own words, Gunn articulated that Superman’s tale resonates deeply with him as a symbol of America. He pointed out that the movie portrays an immigrant who integrates into the nation, but what truly captivates him is the essence of compassion. As he shared with the newspaper, “Basic human kindness is a value we seem to have forgotten.
I acknowledge the movie tackles ‘politics’ and ‘ethics,’ and I’m aware that some folks might not appreciate it. But, as they say, haters gonna hate,” Gunn shared.
The concept that Superman is an immigrant isn’t novel since his creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were themselves children of immigrants, specifically from Jewish backgrounds. In fact, DC Comics has referred to Superman as a “refugee” previously. However, some on the right have expressed disapproval towards Gunn’s statements regarding this topic.
During an episode of The Five on Fox News, Kellyanne Conway, a former advisor to President Trump, stated, “We don’t attend the cinema to be preached at and have our beliefs imposed upon us.” Host Jesse Watters then made a rather crude joke, saying, “His cape supposedly reads MS-13.

Regardless of the opposition, James Gunn remained steadfast when questioned about the issue at the Superman premiere in Los Angeles. He told Variety, “I believe this is a film about kindness, and that’s something everyone can identify with. I’m not here to pass judgment on people.
Sean Gunn, James’s brother and actor portraying Maxwell Lord in the movie, made a strong statement. He expressed, “We stand by our community, right? We admire our immigrants. Indeed, Superman is an immigrant, and those we back in this nation are immigrants as well.” Then he further commented, “If you disagree with that, then perhaps you’re not truly American. Those who oppose immigrants are going against the American spirit.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of the new movie, but it seems that the character of Superman has become a hot topic for discussion. However, let me remind fellow fans, as the Gunn brothers so eloquently put it: Superman stands for kindness, and kindness is a force that unites us, not a reason to be divided.
