Hi Sidney, it’s great to see you back in a new Scream movie! Scream 7 is delivering more of the thrilling, suspenseful action fans love. Before the film came out, there was a lot of excitement – and confusion – when it was announced that several characters who had previously died would be returning. Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley were set to reprise their roles as Ghostface killers Stu Macher and Roman Bridger, and David Arquette was coming back as Dewey Riley, Sidney’s close friend and Gale’s ex-husband, despite all of them having died in previous films. The big question was: how could these characters return in Scream 7? The answer is actually pretty straightforward.
No, Stu Macher Is NOT Alive in Scream 7
Much of the movie revolved around figuring out if the videos Sidney received from the killer were genuine. These clips featured someone resembling an older, scarred Stu, who threatened Sidney and her family. The trailers also suggested Stu might reappear in the Scream series, implying a connection to Sidney’s past. However, this turned out to be a false lead.
Okay, so it’s official: Stu Macher is actually dead in Scream 7. All those videos we saw of him? Turns out they were incredibly convincing deepfakes created by Marco, a supervisor at a psychiatric hospital who’s a total AI genius. It’s a clever twist, and I know audiences are going to be pretty divided by it. Personally, I always believed Stu stayed dead, and I’m relieved to see that’s still the case – no disrespect to Matthew Lillard, who I think is fantastic!
Stu, Roman, Dewey, and (Surprisingly) Mrs. Loomis Appear in Deepfake AI Videos in Scream 7
Stu isn’t the only Ghostface in the last video, even though he shows up in many videos aimed at Sidney. After a fast-paced chase, Tatum is brought back to the Evans house by two people in Ghostface masks—later revealed to be Sidney’s neighbor, Jessica, and her friend, Marco. When Sidney enters the house, a video starts playing on one of the TVs inside.
The story begins with Stu, but quickly shifts focus to other characters like Roman, Dewey, and Mrs. Loomis. Billy’s mother appearing was a surprise. Each of these characters evokes different emotions in Sidney, ranging from guilt and accusations to grief. It’s important to note that no one actually came back to life, and the actors didn’t reprise other roles. The filmmakers didn’t use technology to make the actors look younger; instead, they created deepfake videos to show how these characters might have aged over time.
It remains to be seen if fans will appreciate the use of deceased characters like Ghostface and Dewey in the new AI-generated content. Viewership will likely reveal how well these choices are received.
