Sarah Michelle Gellar Urges Fans NOT to Read the BUFFY Reboot Pilot

The story surrounding a potential new Buffy series continues to unfold. Sarah Michelle Gellar has expressed her sadness about the cancellation of Chloé Zhao’s planned spin-off, and many fans share her disappointment. She now hopes the pilot episode that was filmed is never released.

On the March 18th episode of Page Six’s P6 Radio, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared her wish that the pilot episode of the planned ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ series never becomes publicly available for fans to watch.

She admitted she hoped the show wouldn’t be cancelled prematurely. She worried that if it was, everyone would have an opinion about what went wrong, but the show hadn’t really had a chance to finish its run. Unlike projects like the Batgirl movie that were completed but never released, this show wasn’t even fully produced.

Let’s quickly recap the recent news about a potential Buffy reboot. Director Chloé Zhao was initially set to continue the story with a new generation of Slayers, and fans were thrilled that Sarah Michelle Gellar would reprise her famous role as Buffy Summers after over 20 years. A pilot episode was filmed in the summer of 2025 and picked up by Hulu, but the series was unexpectedly cancelled for reasons that haven’t been made public. Gellar expressed her disappointment online during the Oscars weekend, while celebrating the premiere of her new film, Ready or Not: Here I Come, at SXSW, and Zhao was celebrating the success of Hamnet.

Sarah Michelle Gellar says the cancellation of the potential Buffy reboot was due to a decision made by someone at the studio. Variety reported that Hulu may have felt the proposed story wasn’t appealing to a wide enough audience. Regardless of the exact reason, fans are understandably disappointed. Gellar also told P6 Radio that the script currently making the rounds online isn’t the real pilot and asked fans not to read it.

It’s disappointing that the pilot script leaked, and I’m asking fans not to watch it if they come across it. That version won’t reflect what we intended for the show. Buffy means so much to people, and it’s understandable to be curious about what might have been, but that leaked script probably wouldn’t live up to anyone’s hopes. There’s always a chance Hulu could revisit the reboot with a fresh start and a new team. For now, we can still cherish the idea of a Buffy revival in our imaginations.
