The new movie, The Running Man, isn’t performing well at the box office. It’s expected to earn only around $16 to $19 million during its opening weekend.
The film’s opening weekend earnings were significantly lower than initially expected, falling far short of the projected $20 million. This is especially concerning considering the movie cost a hefty $110 million to produce. To simply recoup its costs, the film needs to earn around $275 million globally, a target it’s currently unlikely to reach.

Audiences Aren’t Showing Up
The movie includes a playful scene with Glen Powell using a towel, clearly intended to attract female viewers, but it wasn’t successful. Only 36% of the audience was female, indicating the studio failed to reach its target demographic.
Instead, they went to see Now You See Me 3, which debuted at number one this weekend and attracted a large female audience – 54% of viewers were women.
Rotten Tomatoes Scores Aren’t Helping
Critics aren’t impressed, and the reception isn’t driving turnout:
- Rotten Tomatoes critics score: 64%
- Audience score: 81% but still lukewarm in sentiment
Our review scored The Running Man 2025 a 4 out of 10, with our critics finding it wasn’t enjoyable and contained numerous flaws.

Another Miss for Stephen King Adaptations
Stephen King adaptations haven’t been consistently successful at the box office. While the first IT movie earned a significant $702 million, its sequel saw a large drop in earnings to $473 million, and other recent adaptations haven’t met studio expectations.
Here’s how the others performed:
- The Long Walk — $62 million
- Doctor Sleep — $72 million
- Pet Sematary — $113 million
I’m afraid The Running Man seems destined to be a box office disappointment. It just doesn’t seem to be gaining any traction with audiences, and I predict it’ll be a pretty expensive flop for the studio.
The new movie Predator: Badlands didn’t do well in theaters, proving to be a box office failure and unable to match the success of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
