Original Story (November 23, 2023):
Located in Rotterdam, Netherlands, the FENIX museum takes inspiration from tales of worldwide migration. Covering a vast area of 16,000 square meters, this impressive structure is slated to debut in a prominent spot within Rotterdam’s city harbor. The site has roots dating back to 1923, as it was previously a significant part of the world’s largest warehouse.
Under the guidance of Ma Yansong and MAD Architects, FENIX emerges, often referred to as “Tornado.” Similar to a natural tornado, the building exhibits life through a moving air structure that rises from the ground floor, extending onto a rooftop platform. This architectural wonder not only captivates the eye but also symbolizes hope for global migrants. Moreover, the design offers breathtaking vistas of Rotterdam, encompassing the River Mass, Hotel New York, and other notable landmarks.
Within the museum, you’ll find gallery spaces spanning two floors. These galleries house a mix of historical artifacts, fine artwork, and commissioned pieces from artists around the world. Notable artists include Beya Gille Gacha based in Paris, Efrat Zehavi from Rotterdam, Chae Eun Rhee from Korea, among others. However, this only scratches the surface as the museum has made more than 200 acquisitions to depict the ongoing narrative of migration history.
FENIX is set to open in 2025.
