Rock icon joins Billy Joel on stage for surprising cover of AC/DC song

As a devoted fan of Billy Joel for decades, I can confidently say that his live performances never fail to impress, despite some hiccups in his personal life. The recent collaboration with Axl Rose at Madison Square Garden was yet another testament to Joel’s enduring talent and ability to adapt.

Billy Joel continues to put on an impressive live performance. It’s understandable that some may have doubts due to his personal challenges in recent years, particularly regarding driving. However, it’s important to remember that Joel consistently delivers top-notch performances.

During his last performance at Madison Square Garden this week, Joel unexpectedly invited Axl Rose, a long-standing acquaintance, to join him on stage. It’s surprising since they have collaborated before. Usually, if you don’t get along with someone, you wouldn’t choose to work with them again.

In 2017, Joel and Rose worked together on AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” with great success. Why not repeat that collaboration, Joel suggested to Rose. Her response was affirmative, leading them to perform the AC/DC classic once more at the Garden this week, with Joel playing his guitar alongside her as the lead artist.

In all fairness, Joel didn’t take the lead during the solo; instead, he focused on providing rhythm. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that role. He may not be recognized as the greatest guitarist of all time. The crowd seldom witnesses him strumming the strings. Moreover, it seems unlikely, or even impossible, for fans to experience Joel playing rhythm guitar alongside Axl Rose singing an AC/DC track (they previously collaborated on “Live and Let Die” by Wings). The performance was undeniably enjoyable; you can relive the moment by…clicking…right…here.

In 2016, Brian Johnson of AC/DC was unable to perform due to hearing issues, and Axl Rose filled in for him during a few shows. Although Rose shares similar vocal tones with Johnson, he doesn’t imitate him while performing with AC/DC. Instead, each artist maintains their unique identity and recognition within the music industry.

According to Billy Joel’s declaration, he has concluded his performances at Madison Square Garden. However, an exciting series of concerts with Sting is planned for the autumn in the US. The advantage of having gifted companions in prominent positions certainly pays off.
