Robert A. Heinlein’s “CITIZEN OF THE GALAXY” is slated to become an animated movie at Lex+Otis Studios. The film will be helmed by Jay Oliva in the director’s chair from a script penned by Luke Lieberman, with both also serving as producers alongside Academy Award winner Ryan Silbert. Vince Gerardis and Matt Kennedy are set to join as executive producers for Startling, Inc.
Initially published in 1957, “Citizen of the Galaxy” tells the story of Thorby, an orphan who was sold into interstellar slavery but whose life takes a turn for the better when he encounters Baslim the Beggar. This novel unfolds as a grand narrative exploring themes of freedom, self-discovery, and fate that traverse the cosmos. Notably, despite Robert A. Heinlein’s extensive screen presence, “Citizen of the Galaxy” has yet to be transformed into a film, TV series, or video game adaptation.
The Creative Team
Olivia, an experienced animator who’s worked on DC and Marvel projects, including founding Lex+Otis, is spearheading the adaptation. His previous work encompasses “Trese” on Netflix, “Ark: The Animated Series”, collaborations with Zack Snyder on various productions like “Twilight of the Gods”, “Justice League”, “Batman vs. Superman”, “Man of Steel”, and more. For Olivia, revisiting Heinlein’s work brings him full circle as he previously directed episodes for “Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles”.
The Starship Troopers Chronicles,” which were set within one of Heinlein’s renowned stories. He is thrilled and honored to go back to these incredibly imaginative beginnings, and he looks forward to adapting one of Heinlein’s previously unmade works into a medium that everyone worldwide can appreciate and enjoy.
Lieberman, renowned for his work in the Red Sonja series and collaborative projects with Stan Lee, wrote the script. He described the project as a lifelong passion, commending the breadth of Thorby’s journey and Heinlein’s creativity.
Lieberman expressed gratitude for the chance to adapt “Citizen”, as it’s a book he’s long desired to bring to life. Thorby, the character in this tale, embarks on an intriguing journey across the cosmos that mirrors various aspects of human existence. His odyssey unfolds against the grandest backdrop imaginable, crafted by the creative genius and visionary insights of Robert Heinlein. This is a unique story that I can’t wait to introduce to a new audience.
Silbert, a multiple Oscar-winning producer, emphasized that animation offers a platform to broaden Heinlein’s original vision due to its creative flexibility. On the other hand, Gerardis and Kennedy, known for their production company Startling, Inc., which brought us popular series like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and Dark Winds, underscored the story’s significance in delving into aspects of human nature, particularly freedom.
According to Silbert, “Heinlein has been the benchmark for science fiction fans for a generation.” The vision that Jay and Luke have for this adaptation not only builds upon Heinlein’s original work but also capitalizes on the unique capabilities of animation. We are thrilled to embark on this adventure together and can’t wait to see what we can create.
Kennedy expressed his excitement, stating, “Vince and I are delighted to collaborate with Luke, Ryan, and Jay in animating a timeless literary masterpiece. With its daring examination of themes like freedom, identity, and human nature, this iconic tale offers an ideal base for a film that will enthrall both seasoned fans and fresh viewers.
Heinlein on Screen
Robert A. Heinlein’s literary works have sparked numerous adaptations for over half a century, such as “Starship Troopers” (1997), “The Puppet Masters” (1994), and “Predestination” (2014). Animation has also been involved, with the movies “Red Planet” and several animated versions of “Starship Troopers”. The latest film adaptation of “Citizen of the Galaxy” upholds this tradition by presenting one of Heinlein’s less frequently explored masterpieces to contemporary viewers.
Release Window
At Lex+Otis, work on both the script and visual aspects for the animated “Citizen of the Galaxy” is progressing well. The production team aims to launch this exciting project in the early part of 2027.
