Review: ‘The One You Know’: Alice in Chains’ grunge resurgence from 2018

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of rock music under my belt, I can confidently say that Alice in Chains’ “The One You Know” is a testament to their timeless sound and gritty songwriting prowess. Having grown up with bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, it was only natural for me to develop a soft spot for the darker, moodier side of 90s grunge.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my thoughts on an Alice in Chains tune that’s not fresh off the presses, yet still resonates strongly. You might recognize this gem as “The One You Know,” penned by the iconic American rock group, Alice in Chains. Known for their ’90s classics like “Man in the Box,” “Would?”, and “Rooster,” this song was unveiled on May 3, 2018, as the lead single from their sixth studio album, Rainier Fog. This release signified their comeback after a five-year gap since their previous album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013), and its hit single “Hollow.”

“The track, ‘The One You Know,’ isn’t too far from Alice in Chains’ usual musical style, and that’s perfectly okay. It’s defined by powerful, grating guitar chords, sometimes discordant, and somber, ominous vocals, which are hallmarks of their distinctive sound. Essentially, it carries a strong ‘Alice in Chains feel.'”

As a devoted fan, I’d describe their sound as a harmonious fusion of grunge, alternative metal, and hard rock, with a hint of sweet-and-sour undertones. The song “The One You Know” delves into complex themes such as confusion, distrust, and introspection. Upon hearing the chorus, “And I’m the one you know,” my mind automatically filled in the blanks with a darker interpretation, “I’m the one you loathe…” Perhaps this reveals more about my own psyche than it does about the band.

The lyrics hint at a difficult connection or struggle, either between people or within the band members themselves – this is something they often explore. Don’t be surprised if their music isn’t all about happiness and sweets! It’s unlikely. Also, because grunge has had such an impact on rock music, it seems unfair not to mention any iconic grunge artists when discussing influential rock musicians.

How “The One You Know” stands in Alice in Chains’ legacy

1. The tune was warmly accepted by both fans and critics, commending its impressive guitar work and robust vocals from Jerry Cantrell and William DuVall. This further cemented Alice in Chains’ reputation as a band capable of maintaining their relevance while sticking to their roots. Directed by Adam Mason, the music video combines live-action footage of the band with narrative segments that convey a surreal, dystopian atmosphere aligning with the song’s somber tone.

Album context

As a die-hard fan of Alice in Chains, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of pride when I talk about their album, Rainier Fog. You see, this was their first record made back in our hometown, Seattle, after more than two decades. The title itself, Rainier Fog, symbolizes the strong bond they share with our city’s music scene, a connection represented by Mount Rainier. As BMG’s Zach Katz put it so accurately: “They’ve never needed to follow trends…” Instead, they’ve always been true to themselves and their roots.

Apart from the popular “rocking” style, “The One You Know” stands out. It serves not only as a powerful introductory track but also showcases Alice in Chains’ talent for growth while maintaining their distinctive sound. In an era where rock music is grappling to find its identity among contemporary listeners, this band has managed to hold onto its relevance. Strangely, it appears that many have overlooked the fact that they should continue to be as significant as ever.
